I just don't get it!

This French farce was translated by Beverley Cross for the British theatre. While the humor is truly an acquired taste, I felt that the women who were the flight attendants were nothing more than caricatures and the men, Robert and Bernard, were just misogynistic. Now, I know this is supposed to be light-hearted humor at best but I can't get past the obvious sexism and male chauvinism in the script. In fact, all of the characters in the play were really caricatures and you couldn't take them seriously and the plot was just absurd at best. I don't think that I want to spend money on tickets on a play about avoidance, swinging doors, and bachelors and dumb and blind stewardesses with a strange housekeeper who keeps up the charades for her employer's sake.

Play for the time period, but dated

As a theatre teacher, I ordered this product for my students to create tech-projects for Florida Thespians. My high-schoolers were attracted to the idea of a man juggling his three "fiance's". But the story has been done a million times (The Importance of Being Ernest comes to mind.) I can't imagine doing this as an actual play. The idea of "newfangled air travel" is somewhat dated and I can't [...] magine any way to make it current.

About the Author

Becky Chambers was raised in California as the progeny of an astrobiology educator, an aerospace engineer, and an Apollo-era rocket scientist. An inevitable space enthusiast, she made the obvious choice of studying performing arts. After a few years in theater administration, she shifted her focus toward writing. Her creative work has appeared at The Mary Sue, Tor.com, Five Out Of Ten, The Toast, and Pornokitsch. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is her first novel, and was funded in 2012 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

After living in Scotland and Iceland, Becky is now back in her home state, where she lives with her partner. She is an ardent proponent of video and tabletop games, and enjoys spending time in nature. She hopes to see Earth from orbit one day.

Amazingly comforting--but stimulating

Like its predecessor (which is not necessary to follow and enjoy this book, but why wouldn't you read it?!), this book introduces us to a huge variety of species, cultures, ideas, and lifestyles--but all through the emotionally potent viewpoint of a few key characters. You may come for the space opera, but you stay for the people, whatever form they take. And yet throughout it all, you are taking part in a conversation about what it means to be a person, to be part of a family, and to have purpose. Wonderfully well done; I hope the author continues to explore the universe she has created!

Even better than Small Angry Planet

I loved Becky Chamber's first book. I don't think you have to have read that to enjoy this, but if you like this one, by all means go back and read the first one.

When I sat down to read this book, I was a little nervous. I had loved the first book so very much, and that's a lot of pressure to put on a sequel, even a stand-alone sequel. But this book is, if anything, even better. Although the setting for the series is very much space and colonies and aliens and even the occasional space war, the focus is really on the characters and the cultures that they come from.

This book is about what makes a person a person, and how being a "manufactured" person affects how one emerges as a person. Although the two main characters are a human and an AI in a human body (a "kit"), the book is filled with many other people from different species and cultures. A great deal of the story concerns learning to become a person when you were built more to be a thing (a slave or an AI). The multitude of interesting, well-conceived aliens surrounding the two main characters help illuminate that journey.

Mind you, this is in no way a classic Campbellian "hero's journey". It's about the journey of having to invent oneself with no good role models for how to be the kind of person you are. Amidst a dazzling array of people from wildly different backgrounds, the book explores the weightedness of names (both main characters name themselves, for different reasons, but in both cases, the act is heavily symbolic), the difference between the interior and exterior view of the same person, the way one's background determines the degree to which there is congruence between the self and the body in which the self resides, and oh, so very much more.

The characters have depth, the setting is intriguing, and I could go on raving about how mich I loved this book. But you shouldnt be reading this comment -- you should be reading the book. If you like character-driven stories set in solidly world-built locations and a writer with a real appreciation for the depths of cultural differences, you are in for a real treat.

Enjoyed this book so much

I read Long Way to a Small Angry Planet with my husband, and we both loved it. (The narrator for the book on tape is amazing too!) We pre-ordered A Closed and Common Orbit because of how much we enjoyed the humor, world -building, and science of the first book. I definitely enjoyed this sequel; learning more about Pepper's past, seeing the new Lovelace surviving her changed circumstances. I don't recall lol'g during the sequel as much, but I think the tone and focus is different; there's still some fun bits and some bittersweet moments, but we're spending this sequel learning about Pepper's past and how screwed up life still is for AIs in this universe and how Sidra (formerly known as Lovelace) finds her way. I liked how the first book handled gender discussions, and this sequel continues that trend. There was less overt romance/sex, and I actually appreciated that, although it was really interesting learning more of the Aleuon. Finally in terms of sci-fi, I'm not a person who gets hung up on "is this realistic science?" so take with a grain of salt but I really enjoyed the sci-fi in the book, particularly the Easter Eggs that Mr. Crisp included. Anyway - I thought it was a great continuation of the series. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

She now is an event organizer for a nonprofit but still finds time to do yoga, write books, play with her German Shepard, and keep her husband in line.Brian still believes he fooled Sierra into marrying him. �They met in college during a cycling class and it has been a wild ride since. �Brian spends his time in a biology lab looking under a microscope and teaching. �In his spare time he coaches youth athletics, tutors after school, and tries to keep up with his wife.

Great advice that is an easy read (and simple to put into practice)

The Butlers do an excellent job of sharing some useful advice for newlyweds. As a happily married man who still wonders how he and his wonderful wife survived that first year of marriage, I know good advice when I read it.

At times the text is overly simplistic, but the pitfalls and their solutions are presented clearly and with great instructions on creating and maintaining a solid relationship.

Highly recommended for all marriages!

As a newly-wed, I really enjoyed this book. I love that the information comes from first-hand experience and research, instead of other books that throw statistics and fantasy lives at you. I highly recommend this book not only for newly-weds but for any married couple that has found themselves in a rut. The thing that I liked most about this book is that while reading it I was able to relate, and even to point out passages to my husband and say "this is you" or "that is so me". It made me feel good knowing that my husband and I are not the only ones that have a few issues and to know that we are on a good path to staying in a healthy and long marriage.

I really liked the tone of this book. It wasn't stuffy and boring like other first year marriage books I've recently read. I've been reading several of these books ever since I got engaged. I'm trying to be part of a successful marriage and this book had some great insight.

Bridges, Not Walls made me realize what a joke the American college system has become

It's good to know that if I'm ever in a tragic accident that causes a horrific amount of brain damage I will still be able to become a communications professor because that is how stupid and insane this book is. The author just says common sense information and then makes up some weird name for it to sound intellectual but actually comes off as insufferably pretentious and dim. As you might imagine, my communications professor was essentially the same way so naturally we were assigned this expensive piece of garbage. I literally read maybe 3 chapters in the entire book and still passed the class, which is how depressingly simple this book is. Seriously, if you are assigned this book DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Just have an IQ over 75 and you'll do just fine without it, I believe in you.

I read this book for a class I just finished. It was not torture to read, it was actually very interesting and immensely helpful. I enjoyed reading it and wish they sold it in Kindle version.

Brilliant selections.

Indispensable. If you have use for samizdat, great writing, or all those tales of Russia you'd love to read again, Buy this book.

Typically I don't like these portable readers, especially when it comes to tying many authors, styles, and works together, but this one feels like the only chance you'll have at reading so many brilliant voices. The writers and their stories are just heartbreaking.

Olesha's Envy alone is enough to bring anyone to tears.

How it was Done in Russia

I bought this book for a course in Russian short fiction, and two years later I still find myself coming back to it. There are many great examples of Soviet and pre-Soviet writing in this anthology, the complete text of Olesha's novella "Envy", as well as some excerpts from longer works like "The Master and Margarita" and "Dr. Zhivago".

True to the Russian literary tradition, most of the pieces occupy a bizarre liminal space between incredibly funny and incredibly disturbing. The author I'm most grateful for having been introduced to through this volume is Danill Kharms, an absurdist writer from the early Soviet era. His "Anecdotes about Pushkin's Life" mocks the kind of hero worship prevelant in the literary world by presenting a series of ridiculous one-paragraph stories that make little to no sense, but are quite funny.

Other highlights in this book include Zamayatin's (authour of "We") "The Cave", Babel's "My First Goose", Platonov's "The Potudan River", Zoshchenko's bureaucratic allegory "Bees and People", Gorky's "Recollections of Leo Tolstoy", and Shalamov's Gulag horror story "Lend Lease".

This book is well worth getting, and you'll find yourself returning to it over and over again, each time finding something new.

From a body of believers to a body of beliefs

Split into two parts, Christianity in the West addresses two themes: the state of "traditional" Christianity, or Catholicism as practiced by the majority of Western European Christians prior to the sixteenth century, and the changes wrought upon this community by the Reformation. In a book of one hundred and seventy-one pages, Dr. John Bossy uses only seventeen endnotes. This is an important observation, because it emphasizes the familiarity and virtuosity that Bossy displays with his subject. Although the author provides a short preface, the book lacks chapters dedicated to either an introduction or a conclusion. Bossy tells us up front that his book addresses this question: "Supposing that your account of what you call traditional Christianity is roughly correct, what difference does it make to the conventional narrative of sixteenth-century reformations, Protestant or Catholic?" Roughly, Bossy is trying to provide a new perspective on what the medieval society of Christians had before the reforms of the sixteenth century, and what was lost afterwards. And there can be no mistake that Bossy definitely thinks more was lost than gained.

Part One: Traditional Christianity examines the beliefs and rites of the medieval Church. Bossy's main theme is that traditional Christianity was not a system of religion thrust from the top down, from theologians onto the peasantry, but rather a rich social construct, equally participated in and constructed by all members of society - peasant, burgher, friar, bishop. The author illustrates this by the use of many examples of traditional belief. Bossy discusses the importance of family to the medieval society, and how this was reflected in a fascination with the extended family of Christ - his mother's relations, his step-cousins, etc. Particular attention is paid to the hierarchy of the seven deadly sins, and the difference between sins of concupiscence (or desire) such as gluttony and lechery, and the sins of aversion, which were pride, anger, and envy. Bossy argues that society's winking tolerance of the sins of desire but the special punishments for the sins of aversion prove that those which would disrupt the community the most were defined as the worst sins. This thesis is strengthened even more when Bossy discusses the formation of the Christian fraternities that proliferated throughout Europe. More than a guild or simple municipal brotherhood, these fraternities banded together for strictly Christian purpose, be it glorification of the Eucharist, transmission of catechism, or public charity in the form of delivering Christian burial to members of the community. In summation, the first eighty-seven pages of the book consist of Bossy describing the many ways in which the diverse body of Western European Christians were united by the collective social belief in the Roman Catholic Church.

In contrast, Part Two: Christianity Translated is an eighty page discussion of what changed in Christianity after the turbulent sixteenth century, whether due to the Protestant or Catholic reformations. Assuming his reader's familiarity with the basics, Bossy dispenses with the narrative of dates and names and instead studies changes in theology, belief, and practice. There is discussion of the elimination of representative religious art by the Protestants, the growing popularity of printed catechisms for all religions, and the difficult knot of beliefs around the Trinity and Christ's godhead versus his manhood. Bossy is keenly interested in the growing rift between public and private practices of faith, in what power was surrendered by the organized church to the individual faithful, and what structures replaced the Church in the minds of the society. Here Bossy sees perhaps not the disintegration of the tight social fabric he saw as the defining characteristic of traditional Christianity, but certainly the compartmentalization and enclosure of that society into smaller, more self-sufficient groups. His closest statement to a summation is that "[b]y 1700 the Christian world was full of religions, objective social and moral entities characterized by system, principles, and hard edges..." Clearly, where Bossy sees an organic body of the faithful in late medieval Christianity, he sees a splintered collection of competing orthodoxies by 1700, and the change was not a happy one.

The book is certainly engaging, if a bit obtuse at times. Bossy is able to gather his audience and pull the reader along through his summaries and arguments, and the journey is enlightening. A writer with such a commanding knowledge of his subject is always a pleasure to read. However, genius may not always be entirely convincing. Bossy's treatment of the forms the new Christianity took is the strongest part of his book. His earlier characterization of medieval Christianity is a little too pat, unfortunately. Bossy himself admits that he is glossing over wide swaths of the Church, particularly its Irish fringe and national Orthodox churches. In striving to see the unity of the body of the faithful in 1400, Bossy turns a blind eye to the many sectarian influences that were already existent, and indeed had always been there. This flaw does not diminish the fine summation of the effects of the reformation in Part Two, but it does undermine his thesis of the unified whole of the medieval Church. And without that, the reader is left rather nonplussed by Bossy's conviction that so much was lost by 1700.

A Book for Brits

The authors approach is that of the Anales school. He is good at that, but a difficult read for Yanks. There are frequent unexplained references which may make sense to someone from the UK, but are lost on this American. Sometimes the references are simply intrinsically opaque in themselves. Explanatory footnotes are sometimes necessary, and this book has few if any of them. This is an area with which I am quite familiar although I am not a professional historian.

Dry and hard to read

I had to read this for my course. The author assumes you know pretty much everything about the Reformation and all its players. Full of lofty vernacular, I had to read the book with Google open so that I could look up what he was writing about... and I have some background knowledge of the Reformation. In addition to anything else, the print is woeful and detracts from any enjoyment to be derived from this turgid slog.

The justification of belief in such systems can be understood in terms of MacIntyre's account of tradition-constituted rationality, provided that this notion of rationality is made more specific by the incorporation of elements of Lindbeck's theology. Equally, the book argues that Lindbeck's theology can be strengthened by the incorporation of elements drawn from MacIntyre's work. This book will be of value to students of philosophy and theology and to the general reader who is interested in the question of the grounds of belief.

About the Author
David Trenery is an Associate Lecturer at the Open University, United Kingdom. After a successful career in social work and social services management, he returned to his earlier study of philosophy and religion and was awarded a PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2013. He is now combining his expertise in philosophy and social work by working on the relationship between MacIntyrean virtue ethics and social work practice.
