A Beauty Junkie at Heart: Laura Mercier's Personal "Must Have" Cosmetic Items

I am one of the biggest beauty junkies I know. I have hundreds of products in my makeup case—anything I could possibly need for a shoot, including bags of false eyelashes and glitter. I’ll pick up things that seem interesting or unusual, products that have been recommended by someone, or an item that features new technology. Japan is a fabulous place to find the latest products. They even have colors you can’t find in the U.S. I used to be neurotic about having the latest things and the best products. Since I have my own line and I’ve been able to work with my labs on getting the best textures, the finest powders, etc., I’m much less neurotic. If I can’t find the exact thing I want, I can create it.

When it comes to products I personally use at home--not just photo shoot stuff--I’m equally obsessed. I love visiting new boutiques when I travel, whether it’s Paris or London, and discovering items I never had heard of before. I also read a lot of European magazines and check out the items recommended by the beauty editors, since they see every product that hits the market.

I’ve browsed through my bathroom and my linen closet to put together a list of my current favorites, which includes products in my Laura Mercier line and other brands. I think you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.--Laura Mercier

Spa Cinq Mondes Huile Somptueuse. This body oil is from small company that does organic products. It’s especially good for your skin after a sauna or a steam.

Carita Fluide de Beaut� 14. I use this oil for everything—body, face and hair. You can do whatever you want with it. After-sun, bath, spa, anything. It smells like verbena and is just incredible.

Decleor face oils. These come in small glass bottles. My favorite one is neroli because I love the scent of it. You can apply the oil when you go to a sauna or steam room. It stops the face from being too dehydrated from the heat and all the warmth opens your pores and helps it penetrate better. I also massage it on the face before I do a scrub. Don’t use this before you put on makeup because it’s not a good base for cosmetics.

Laura Mercier Mega Moisturizer. This is richer than my regular moisturizer, but it’s not heavy thanks to the emu oil in the formula. It’s extremely calming and very compatible with makeup. I wear it in the winter when my skin is dry. During the rest of the year when my skin is normal, I do the regular moisturizer.

Laura Mercier Perfecting Water and Purifying Oil. These are new favorites of mine. I remove my makeup with the cleansing oil, following with a foaming cleanser and then apply the hydrating water with a cotton pad. In the middle of the summer, when we had the heat wave, I only used the hydrating water at night, no moisturizer, so I wouldn’t feel any greasiness on my face.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I use this on my lips in the winter when I need a heavy duty blanket of moisture at night. I’ve also used when my lips have burned in the sun.

Christophe Robin Lemon Cream Cleanser. Christophe is a great French hair colorist. He gave this shampoo to me and I love it because it smells so fantastic.

Nylon scrub gloves. I love scrubbing with these from my shoulders to my feet because it gives you a friction that helps your blood really circulate. It’s very active and deeper than a scrub product. Usually I use these in the shower in the morning. These gloves are great if you’re prone to ingrown hairs.

Laura Mercier Face Polish. I’m absolutely hooked on my gommage. It’s a violet-scented exfoliant and I use it every other day in the shower. It’s amazing for my pores.

Laura Mercier Lip Colour Sheer in Just Lips and Sexy Lips. I made these two for myself because I’ve always been in love with that perfect, sheer lip.

Laura Mercier Thickening & Building Black Mascara. This holds my lashes in place, thickening them without clumping. It doesn’t make them heavy or weigh them down.

Laura Mercier Bleu Marine Eyeliner. This cake liner is navy blue, almost black, and it makes the whites of the eyes really clean because of the color. If you apply between your lashes and close to your lash line, it thickens the appearance of your lash line.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. This would be my desert island product. Even though I have fairly good skin these days, the camouflage brightens the shadows on my face and makes me look less sad. It immediately makes me look a little younger.

Love this big beautiful coffee table makeup book

I was reluctant to buy this book based on all the negative reviews, but I got it anyway. I really do not understand what all the hostility is about.

This is definitely a gorgeous coffee table book, featuring Laura Mercier's makeup tips, her makeup and yes the celebrities who swear by her products in gorgeous photos.

I am not a makeup artist and I appreciate simple makeup tips that I can do myself at home vs. going to a cosmetic counter, getting overly made up with no instructions on how to do it at home.

I love her concealer products and I highly recommend this beautiful book and her products to anyone who wants to have a natural, flawless look.

Interesting, but not usable

It's a pretty book, with lots of information, but unless you're going into the makeup business yourself, it's just not practical. Too many products, too complicated applications. Cute, but not really usable.

Laura really didn't want to write this book...

...She states this in the introduction. The only reason I think this book came to be is because she was offered some kind of amazing book deal, which was surely followed by the work of a ghostwriter.

But all that aside, there isn't much more information in this gigantic thing that what could be compressed into a pamphlet. Most of it is just photos of celebrities (which, I can only assume are photos of the makeup she's done? They never say). If you carefully read through the directions for how she applies foundation and eye concealer - that is very helpful and unique. But that was just about the only thing that was worth it.

The topic was so boring! With that aside it is still a great textbook covering the basic workings of the US government and how it should function. Found it much cheaper here than I could at any book store.

This book represents the best part of thirty years personal and shared experience working with distribution businesses of all types in a variety or roles, starting initially as a accountant with Arthur Andersen, though to the last twenty two years as management consultant with VIA International, a firm that specialises in routes to market strategy and implementation. In that time I have had the opportunity to work with some of the world's leading practitioners in the field of distribution channels. And some pretty terrible ones too. In many ways, it is from the clients and situations where things were going wrong that the sharpest lessons could be drawn. �

At VIA, we are lucky enough to spend most of our time consulting for some of the world's most successful brands and companies (yes, they still ask for help),� which means we have seen an enormous amount of best practice. Often though, these companies are challenged by sheer scale, complexity and channel overlap or conflict which prevents them from seeing the business issues quite as clearly as they might. They are usually relieved to find we can bring some clarity and objectivity to the situation and can recommend strategies that are rooted in commercial logic to deliver the outcomes they need. Many of these situations have found their way into this book, albeit usually with a cloak of anonymity. You will find many real companies and situations named and described in the book too, but these insights are based on facts already in the public domain or well known among the trade.

Even more usefully, much of our work requires us to go inside the distribution models of our client's routes to market and investigate the actual measures and business model dynamics operating in the distributors and final tier trade channel players.� This provides the basis for much of the insight into each type of channel business model laid out in the different sections of the book.

Finally, we have had the opportunity to work with many smaller companies and businesses, typically following the introduction of an injection of venture finance, which means that all concerned are expecting a sharp up-tick in sales.� This growth often has to come from a combination of new customer segments, new markets or new products, which usually means new channels too. There have been some hard lessons learnt along the way about establishing a value proposition that will attract the players in the channels needed to deliver the required growth and these are laid out for you here too.

All of the content in this book has at some time or other been taught to people in real channel roles or distribution businesses, looking for insights, concepts, frameworks, heuristics and practical lessons that they can take away and apply.� For many of the people attending these workshops, English has been their second or even third language, so the experience has been a good test of how to communicate business and financial concepts in terms that make sense to people who work in sales and marketing (and sometimes, vice versa too).

This is an outstanding resource presented in an easy-to-read (and refer to) fashion. Far too many businesspeople fail to appreciate the importance of distribution and the attendant channel economics: I have sat in many conferences that opened with "Now, assume we'll get the distribution we need." Assume! Julian Dent shows how to manage (not assume) that process and to do so in a way that is disciplined, measurable, and, ultimately, successful.

This is a nice book that compares the Armor of God to the "armor" we wear while riding a bike. This version seems to be best geared to 2-3 year old children -- it was just a little too "young" for our 4 1/2 year old.

Author of more than 70 monographs, study guides, and pamphlets, Anthony M. Coniaris released the 11th-edition of this text in 2004. The new and expanded 11th-edition contains 86 unique 'entries' consisting of one-to-four pages length--not chapters per se, which include introductory overviews of "What the Bible Says About Children," "Church Fathers on Child Rearing," with Preface and Foreword that appear unchanged since the first edition in 1977.

Father Coniaris has served more than 50 years to date as Priest assigned to St. Mary Greek Orthodox Church (GOAA), Minneapolis, MN (currently Priest Emeritus). The publisher for his media is Light & Life Publishing Company, which is the Orthodox Christian company he founded in 1966. Light&Life displays its inventory on more than 200 pages (2009-10 catalog), and arguably earns its self-promoted reputation as the world's largest Orthodox Christian supplier of books, teaching aids, CD's, video, icons, and pamphlets.

The layout and look of the 'Making God Real' text are practical, thus weaving various pastoral themes and sage advice across a span of 47 entries, before introducing the liturgical year with initial calendar entry in text of Great Lent. Careful editing prevented what might have amounted to derailing the progression of entries by a mid-manuscript introduction of the liturgical year.

Indeed, the text maintains a steady stream already established in the first 47 entries of how parents ought to raise children to sanctify all that children learn by doing what all family members proclaim of Christ in speech and action. Faith in action is the perspective of the Christian community, which Coniaris addresses to the nuclear family. But his advice to parents of children extends naturally to lifelong service within the Church and builds a global ethos of "making God real."

Fearless in voice and tone, the author attends to topics like sex education in the home and what to say about death to children with similar respect and candor as the essential theme of receiving Christ often in the Eucharist. To paraphrase the author's advice concerning frequent Communion (e.g. p. 112), he depicts bread and wine as extensions of Christ's humility and desire to serve.

Absent from the book are entries pertaining to the Internet, music, inter-faith marriages, respect for families of religions that differ from Orthodoxy and families for whom there is animus toward any religion, use of cellular technologies, families without children, blended families, and how to maintain open-channels of communication in families with pre-pubescent and teenage children. Therefore, I believe that the title should be re-worded to signify the book's actual content, viz. a focus on families with children up to age 12.

My recommendation brings enthusiastic support of the author's pastoral tone, and suggested use of this text as part of parenting/god-parenting classes. These classes ought to be requisite staples in six-month long or annual parish cycles prior to Baptism of infants, with additional programmatic and pastoral follow-up as necessary Orthodox support of families. Perhaps it is the lack of such parish programs that fuels a tragic need to evangelize the the very Christians who call themselves Orthodox and leaves many to wonder if God is real, indeed.
