Slim, Trim, & Condensed

Love, Love, Love Johnny Finchham's Spellbinding Power of Palmistry book, or Apprentice to Pro. Absolutely adore his writing style and candor. Was thrilled to see a "New" book come out.

For the money - I would recommend the books above, as the Spellbinding Power of Palmistry is packed w/ a lot more info. This book is only 68 pages. With the exception of perhaps a few more detailed pictures & clarification(s), there's very little in the way of any "new info." Majority of it is contained within his other books. This seems to be a condensed version. If you're new to Hand Analysis & want a quick, condensed version, this is OK. Myself I prefer more indepth info & was looking so forward to 'new info.'

Otherwise Johnny Fincham's books are top notch & well worth the money. Love the cover on this pamphlet-like book, a bit disappointed, no new tidbits to learn from. 'Cest la vie~

ah - takes me back

This was a fun book about Stitch Head, a long-forgotten creation of a mad scientist. Stitch Head stays around the castle to make sure his master's creations don't go wild in the nearby town and bring punishment down on his master. After years of working behind the scenes, Stitch Head is pushed into a situation where the "no visitors" rule is thrown to the wind.

Stitch Head, for starters, is simply adorable. The illustrations in the book are perfect to set up the quirky atmosphere, and we have villains galore. This book reminds me so much of what I loved as a child: Odd monsters, freak shows, potions and creepy castles. Oh, and we have a monster called Creature, who has three arms. I freaking love it. This would be a great series for any boy to read. I think girls like me would really enjoy it as well - there is a girl who shows up near the end who is a butt-kicking type of gal. I have seen there are more books in the series, and I hope she is in them. I would love to read more of these to see what happens to Stitch Head next and to see if the fun continues.

This is the first of a series of the misadventures of a charming little creation called Stitch Head. What drew me to these books - even more than the story - was the incredibly high production values of the book itself. The illustrations are utterly enchanting and each and every page is a work of art. For grown up goths, looking for perfect books for their little monsters, you can't go wrong with Stitch Head!

A heart-filled tale that will keep you engaged from beginning to end!

I had never heard of this story before, but when I got it my youngest daughter wanted to read it with me and we jumped right in. The story brings together the story of Frankenstein's monster to life with a ton if heart, love and more. Stitch Head is sad in some ways and heroic in others. Will he be able to find the friendship and the "life" that he has always wanted? Read this adventure filled, humorous tale that will keep you engaged from beginning to end!

In these lectures, delivered only months before his untimely death, Oecolampadius poured out his very life for the sake of the Reformation in Basel and the formation of the citys first generation of Reformed pastors.

Mickey L. Mattox is Associate Professor of Theology at Marquette University, where he leads the graduate program known as Luther Studies in a Catholic Context. He earned the PhD Degree at Duke University, and has written broadly in Luther studies, the history of exegesis, and ecumenical theology.

A much needed translation, helpfully printed alongside the Latin.

The study of the Reformation has only benefitted from increased study of those reformers "in the wings". Unfortunately, the works of those other than Luther and Calvin have long been hidden from English speakers, meaning that students do not encounter them until they have gained a mastery of Latin, German and French and a tolerance for microfiche.

Mattox's translation, printed opposite the Latin text, is an excellent contribution to this larger project of making accessible a broader range of reformers, and his brief introduction brings his experience as a Reformation historian and scholar of Genesis commentaries to bear in providing helpful background. Hopefully, Mattox will continue to publish translations of Oecolampadius' work and help bring this important reformer to the attention of English-speaking readers of the Reformation.

Dr. Stewart "Stu" Tubbs is the Darrell H. Cooper Professor of Leadership and is the former Dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University. He received his doctorate from the University of Kansas, his Masters and Bachelors degrees are from Bowling Green State University. He has completed postdoctoral study at Harvard Business School and at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Tubbs has consulted for numerous corporations and has won three awards for his outstanding teaching. In 1994 he received the Outstanding Leadership Award in London, England from the Academy of Business Administration. He is the author of A Systems Approach to Small Group Interaction (7th ed.), 2001 and co-author with Sylvia Moss of Human Communication (8th ed.), 2000, both published by McGraw-Hill. Mistborn es precioso, pero esa edici�n en espa�ol es horrible. Yo por eso los tengo en ingl�s. Igual la traducci�n de algunos t�rminos al espa�ol le quita vida a la narraci�n. Lord Ruler = Lord Legislador, con esa traducci�n parece que es un bur�crata en vez de un villano todopoderoso, y Mistborn= Nacidos de la Bruma tambi�n le quita realismo a la narraci�n, porque Mistborn es un termino f�cil de usar y de decir y suena realista, algo que las personas dir�amos si la Allomancia existiera, pero Nacidos de la Bruma, son cuatro palabras, no es un termino f�cil de utilizar y no es cre�ble. as� que si pueden, l�anlo en ingl�s.

Excelente novela de fantas�a

�Qu� hubiera pasado si Harry Potter se hubiera aliado con Voldemort? �Qu� hubiera pasado si Frodo no hubiera destruido el Anillo �nico y Sauron hubiera vuelto en su m�ximo esplendor? En resumen, �qu� hubiera pasado si el h�roe profetizado hubiera fallado?
Es con este disparador que inicia El Imperio Final, el primer libro de la trilog�a de Nacidos en la Bruma.
La novela nos presenta un mundo donde el H�roe de las Eras, el h�roe profetizado que destruir�a a la �Profundidad� y restaurar�a el mundo a su antiguo esplendor, ha fallado. Desde entonces, el mundo se ha sumido en oscuridad. Y es aqu� donde el autor muestra una de sus grandes destrezas: la construcci�n del mundo donde transcurre la acci�n. Con unas breves pinceladas, Sanderson logra crear un mundo sin esperanzas, devastado por la ceniza, las brumas y un gobierno tir�nico, que no se siente para nada disparatado.
Asimismo, el autor es igual de meticuloso al establecer un sistema de magia. Si bien la misma no es referida como tal, ciertos personajes en la novela cuentan con distintos poderes alom�nticos; es decir que, �quemando� metales dentro de su cuerpo, pueden adquirir ciertas habilidades, como �empujar� o �tirar� de metales, mayor fuerza, y m�s. A diferencia de otras novelas de fantas�a, donde los poderes y la magia son solo conceptos vagos que se tuercen a la voluntad y necesidades de los protagonistas y la narraci�n, aqu� siguen reglas claras y uno siente que todo tiene una explicaci�n que nunca carece de sentido dentro de la l�gica propia del relato.
Por otro lado, con la misma habilidad con la que Sanderson presenta su mundo y su sistema de magia, la novela est� dotada de una trama apasionante, llena de giros argumentales que nunca desentonan con la narraci�n ni parecen forzados, y como si fuera poco, con personajes de los cuales uno no puede evitar encari�arse. Pese a que cuenta con algunos personajes moralmente grises, como Kelsier, en su mayor�a, se tratan de personajes m�s afines a la fantas�a cl�sica, pero no por eso son menos complejos.
El Imperio Final presenta una prosa sencilla y llana, y beneficia m�s a la historia y el dialogo, en pos de crear un ritmo despiadado y que uno no pueda soltar el libro. Aun as�, durante las escenas de acci�n —que abundan—, puede volverse irritante tener que leer una y otra vez las descripciones de c�mo se �quema� cierto metal y tal otro para lograr tal y cual efecto.
En resumen, el primer libro de Nacidos en la Bruma tiene todo lo que se puede pedir del g�nero: grandes personajes, un mundo excelentemente construido, un sistema m�gico incre�blemente original, y giros argumentales deslumbrantes. Si est�n buscando una buena novela de fantas�a, esta es una que sin dudas no pueden dejar pasar.

Debo reconocer que el autor te tira de golpe y desde el principio todo, como si conocieras su mundo, como si lo que te plantea no fuera un mundo nuevo y sorprendente. Me ha costado un poco sumergirme en la holomancia, en los inquisidores, en el Imperio Final, pero una vez que lo hice me parec�an tan natural cosas como"quemar peltre" � "tirar del acero" que cuando se relataban las peleas hasta pod�a imaginarlas en mi cabeza como si fueran una pel�cula de acci�n.
Una trama compleja pero bien planteada, un final que te deja con ganas de m�s pero que no decepciona para nada. Una novela larga pero para nada aburrida, con personajes bien pensados y que act�an en la justa medida para dar balance y sentido a cada acci�n que se va desenvolviendo. Giros y sorpresas que encantan al lector (al menos a mi me han encantado jajajaja) En fin, un libro de fantas�a estupendo, donde la imaginaci�n del autor est� ampliamente explotada y no agotada.
El primer libro que leo de Brandon Sanderson pero no el �ltimo sin duda.

There is a secret sauce...

Having been fortunate enough to have worked at some of the best companies in Silicon Valley and beyond, and with five start-ups under my belt, I can assure you that luck and timing aren't everything. Great vision isn't all it's chalked up to be either. And persistence, while crucial, will only get you so far. All of these things are important, to be sure. However, there is an elusive element to what makes a great company from the start. And John Montgomery has captured its essence. From kick *ss companies like SlideShare, which was recently acquired by LinkedIn to Blogger, to Skype to Webmail.us, certain patterns either predispose a start-up to success or lack thereof.

Great from the Start demystifies the "it" behind what makes certain nascent companies different. Chapter by chapter, John "Monty" Montgomery looks at the role that being conscious plays in making decisions that stick. Disruptive! this book proves to you that it pays more to be good!

I picked up the book at bed time at the end of a long day and started reading thinking that I will browse another book on entrepreneurship and startups. I was wrong. I was reading on and on until it was around 1:30am when sleep got a hold of me. I found it hard to stop reading.

The author writes in a very eloquent and flawless way about how it pays to be good, and how a successful startup can be more successful; and if you are in the process of starting one, then you are more likely to succeed if you start ethical, positive and good first without overlooking price models and how to make money; in other words, greed is not good, only good is good and will bring you more good.

Based on latest research of neuro-leadership and neuro-socio and biological workings of the brain and its impact on human behavior the book starts by laying out the foundation for "using neuroscience, psychology and organizational development to design our startups for how humans work best" the book starts by explaining the role of social neuroscience, neuro-economics and the dynamics of neuro-leadership and the impact this has when you build a humane startup based on trust, and good then you cultivate followers both who champion you inside: work for you diligently and outside: customers. If a startup ecosystem is influenced primarily by its founders and the first batch of employees; then how would you behave, influence and lead in order to accomplish your goal? our biology and brain dynamics says that when we are good to each other we can work more and accomplish more.

The book explains that and the impact of doing the right thing at the right time driven by ethics first, not by greed, and how when you are an ethically inspiring and motivating leader you are bound to accomplish more. But this is no theory. The author lists a good list of startups that he has followed and researched over the last 20 years or so and describes the story of the rise of a technological feat in each case.

This is a good necessary read especially for the aspiring startup founder. I think it brings something new to the table; it sheds a new light, a new perspective on things that are rarely seen or looked at in other good books on the subject, a fresh look at the dynamics of a startup that is more biologically and ethically driven and more related to how we human beings think, work, or how our brains function in an organization like a startup. Inspiring indeed.

Another hit in this series!

Another great installment in the League of Princes series!

This time around we see a whole new side to some of our beloved princes and princesses. I was so intrigued by the 'other side' of Briar Rose and Liam. I can't tell you much, but I can say there are some definite surprises in store for you, dear reader.

What I really enjoyed in The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle were the new characters. The villains were extra vile and the sidekicks were extra punchy. (I love Mr. Troll!) The ending had a nice surprise that sets the stage perfectly for the next book. I also really enjoyed watching some of the princes grow. Liam learned that he is not perfect, and Frederic learned he has strengths. Duncan is still a little 'off' but such a delight. I really think that he and Snow White are my favorites.

If you're wondering what you can expect in The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle, that's simple. You can expect mischief and mayhem of the highest quality. You can also expect uproarious laughter and strange looks from bystanders (because you will laugh out loud). Finally, though, you can expect an excellent adventure full of surprises that will not disappoint.

Silly but entertaining

Another Zany Adventure

I LOVE this series. I like to call it a Funky Fairytale. This was just as charming--and ZANY--as the first book. A fun action-filled romp of an adventure. The narration alone is humorous. It sounds personal as if it is talking directly to you. I was yet again entertained by the titles: "A Hero Cries at Weddings," "A Hero Makes It Up as He Goes Along," "A Hero is Grossed Out by Sticky Floors." Some titles were even dedicated to the villains: "The Villian Redecorates" and "The Villian Just Wants to Have Fun," to name a few. At the beginning of their chapters were snippets from "The Warlord's Path to Power." An excellent example: "A warlord's home should inspire fear in all who lay eyes on it. The walls should induce shivers; the entryway should instill abject terror. Visions of the welcome mat should haunt visitors in their nightmares." Good stuff!

The villains played a much bigger part in this sequel which made it more delicious. Their point of view was wicked fun. Here's a description of one of the new villains, Lord Rundark: He was "born out of a mad alchemist's attempt to distill the essence of pure evil. Others claim he emerged fully grown from an erupting volcano. Although it's also possible that he was the son of a used-cart salesman from Nebbish Village--they didn't keep very good records in Dar." Ha ha. It mentioned that he "killed one of his captains for blinking too much". Deeb Rauber is back with an unnecessary eye patch and pants with holes in the knees. He is an eleven-year-old boy who goes around depantsing people just for the heck of it. He "displayed his ability for yanking down his underlings' pants without them noticing." Reminds me of my youth. Good times.

Gustav is a favorite of mine. He is hot-tempered, always looking for something to hit because of his irrational anger. He often says "Starf it all" which is totally something I could hear my mother saying. He is still living in the shadow of his older brothers. At their birthday celebration he got angry at the bard singing praise to his brothers so he "grabbed the bard by the seat of his tights and hoisted him up in the air with one hand" and then smooshed frosted cake on his face. Finally he said "Maybe now you'll show some respect to the mighty Prince Gustav." He then turned and "slipped on a dollop of icing, and flopped face-first into the giant birthday cake." Flawless humiliating moment.

My favorite scene was with Gustav and Briar dancing while bickering back and forth. Briar told him "It's like you've never danced before in your life. A dead yak has more grace." Gustav replied "Is there a dead yak around? `Cause I'd happily change partners." Briar: "Ooh nice one. Which of your biceps thought up that zinger?" "I have a toy poodle with more bite than you." Gustav then had the witty remark "A poodle? Is that who does your hair?" I was laughing out loud.

I was impressed how the characters evolved. It made it interesting getting to know them in a more intimate way. They got to know each other better through their experiences together. Even Ruffian the Blue had a bigger part. He was so mysterious. You saw a different side to him. Briar shared a different side to her as well, besides spoiled bridezilla. I loved Lila and Ella as strong female characters that took care of business. Little Taylor was a COOL new character with his needle and thread. His fighting style was "string-chi." Absurd and unique, just what I like. I have to admit I now have a favorite name in the series from the added character--Smimf. Best name ever!!! When he told Gustav his name he replied "Sorry to hear that." I had a laugh.

The best part--it had an AWESOME unexpected cliffhanger ending--LOVED IT! It set it up perfectly for the next book. I can't wait to read it!

His extensive background and experience as a mechanical engineer brings important insights to solving mechanical system noise and structural vibration problems in buildings. He has served as president of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, and is a co-chair of American National Standards Institute Committee S12 Noise, Working Group 44 on Speech Privacy.

Joseph A. Wilkes, FAIA, is a registered architect and the editor of the five-volume Encyclopedia of Architecture (Wiley). He has taught at the schools of architecture at the University of Florida and the University of Maryland and has served on the Building Research Advisory Board of the National Academy of Sciences.

Diagnosis of a malaise and a prescription for healing

In this perceptive work, Ayaan Hirsi Ali examines a major issue of our times with admirable fluency and erudition. In the preface she points out the similarities in attitude towards Islamic culture now by the Western adherents of multiculturalism and towards communist regimes by leftists then. Besides an abiding hatred for the West in some circles, it is because of the victim culture and moral relativism that oppressive practices are ignored. Muslims are perceived to be victims of the West. For the same reason, Israel is fiercely condemned while the Palestinians get a free pass. She considers this patronizing and exemplary of racism in its purest form; the idea of the "other" that can do no wrong and must be shielded from criticism. Ibn Warraq exposes all aspects of this harmful fallacy in his classic study Defending the West.

Hirsi Ali asks the advocates of the multicultural society to acquaint themselves with the suffering of women who are treated as chattels. The notion of "group rights" are detrimental to Muslim women, and without emancipation, the socially disadvantageous position of Muslims will persist. She laments the fact that Muslim women are not listened to and calls for self-examination in intellectual discourse. Hirsi Ali also deals with the clash of cultures in Europe as revealed by amongst others Bruce Bawer in While Europe Slept, and examines the triangles of power in the Muslim world itself: the triangle of the strong leader, the clergy and the army, and the triangle of apathy, fundamentalism and refugees/emigration. On this subject, I also recommend Now They Call Me Infidel by Nonie Darwish.

The author provides a brief history of her early childhood in Somalia and her personal emancipation after emigrating to the Netherlands, explaining why she had to leave Holland for the USA. This is engagingly related in her brilliant work Infidel. There is an interview with prominent Canadian Muslim reformer Irshad Manji, a chapter on female genital mutilation and 10 tips for Muslim women who wish to escape their oppressive circumstances. A full transcript of the documentary film Submission is included, the film that led to the death of Theo van Gogh. Hirsi Ali claims that instead of empowering Muslim students through research and training, European universities have become activist centers to further Arab political aims.

She considers Muslims in Europe and around the world to comprise three broad categories: terrorists and the radicals that assist them, the tiny group of reformers that embraces the open society and the large number of undecideds who are caught in a mental vise, the painful contradiction between the harsh tenets of an intolerant religion and the values of the open society. She believes that the first victims of Muhammad are the minds of Muslims themselves as they exist in a situation of cognitive dissonance. Western cultural relativists flinch from criticism of Muhammad for fear of offence, thereby making it more difficult for western Muslims to review their own moral values.

This thought-provoking work provides first-hand experience and knowledge of a particular worldview and serves as an appeal for clear thinking, empowerment and individual liberation. Hirsi Ali nails it when she shows how various evils result from beliefs based on fear. Her insights have universal application as of course they are valid for any religion or cult. Although not flawless, The Caged Virgin is a bright light of courage and reason in the darkness of oppression and brainwashing. The book concludes with bibliographic notes and an index. Because They Hate by Brigitte Gabriel provides further valuable information on the development and results of religious radicalism whilst in The Unlearned Lessons of the Twentieth Century, French philosopher Chantal Delsol explains the civilizational fatigue of contemporary Europe of which one effect is the existence of enclaves where medieval brutality goes unchallenged.

Essential for understanding the position of Muslim women in the west and the conflict of values for Muslim refugees

Everyone should read this book or the author's updated version. The author provides a highly readable explanation of the basic beliefs of Islam, its conflicts with western values, the struggles of Muslim refugees in the west (focusing on women), and distinguishes between the religious and the cultural/traditional position of Muslim women. Ayaan Hirsi Ali presents very articulate arguments about Muslim women issues and proposes reasonable responses in western society. She also points out the unintentional effects of political correctness and religious tolerance on the rights of Muslim women in the west.
