I have read 4 books on this subject and this is by far the best

This is the first time I have created a review but I felt compelled to offset the 1 person out of 12 who gave this book a bad rating. I can't imagine a better more concise inrtroduction to this subject. I can't understand what would motivate somone to give this book a bad review. The title of the book is UNDERSTANDING Enterprise SOA not EXPERT'S guide to Enterprise SOA and it is so well written with such great diagrams that even a non-IT person could understand the material. The examples ARE real and in fact almost EXACTLY mirror the environment of my current company - in fact it will serve as a valuable road map going forward.

If you want to understand this stuff and not get lost in all the vendor self serving hype GET THIS BOOK PERIOD!

Great Introduction on SOA Networks

I have bought every book on SOA available. The best book I have found is Thomas Erl's Service-Oriented Architecture: Concepts, Technology and Design. However this book provides a good hands on with examples. I especially liked the section on SOA Networking and SOA Networks.

Entertaining, but not always correct

It rarely happens that I’m really looking forward to a release of a book. The announcement of “ABAP to the future” by Paul Hardy was such an occasion. Reading the TOC, I was 100% positive that Paul picked the right topics which were needed in order to fulfil the promises of the title. I was particularly excited about the BOPF chapter, since I'm very fond of the framework. Until now there has not been literature out there describing it.

The writing style is very entertaining, light-hearted and uses "funny" to "bizarre" examples. I liked it a lot (I don't need another dull-to-read-facts-driven-bookshelf-beautifier). However, if you're not willing to abstract technology which might be used for sales-order-processing to a monster-factory, you might be disappointed. I highly recommend to look-inside prior to the purchase to check on the compatibility to the style.

While accepting a technical book to be entertaining, it still has to be correct. And this is why I can only partially recommend this book: there are too many statements and explanations which are just not true - particularly in the BOPF chapter. This chapter was so misleading I even wrote a long series of blogs on the SAP Community Network trying to clarify them (you can find them easily searching on SCN for the book's title).

My verdict: If you want to get an overview of hyped and useful technologies on the SAP platform and like light literature, grab it.
If you're looking for a serious introduction and want to understand the basic underlying principles, you at least have to buy an additional book.

It makes you want to be a better programmer

This book reminds me of a scene in the great movie As Good As It Gets were Helen Hunt’s character asks Jack Nicholson’s character (who suffers from OCD) to make a quick compliment after he just hurt her feelings. And, surprisingly, Jack Nicholson’s compliment is that after their relationship developed he started taking an OCD medicine. This does not seem at first as a compliment to Helen’s character and she almost gets up to leave. But then Jack Nicholson quietly adds: “You make me want to be a better man”. And this book makes you want to be a better programmer.

I feel the way it is written and presents information is a very welcome departure from the SAP literature of yesteryears. And I can only hope that more authors will come forward with similar styles.

If you are looking just for the reference materials, there is ABAP keyword documentation available online free of charge. (Compared to the previous version that might as well have been written in German, the 7.4 documentation has been improved quite a bit and is surprisingly very helpful.) Code samples can be found in many SAP demo programs. One does not really need a book these days just to have information. But this book is much more than a collection of ABAP code samples. It's truly an inspiration (I hate this word, but it really is in this case) for the ABAPers, especially those who might have been stuck just repeating what they have been doing for the past 10-20 years (much like I feel sometimes).

Paul’s book is a “sequel” to Next Generation ABAP Development. Even though I admire Thomas Jung and Rich Heilman and believe they are the greatest SAP educators of our times, Paul’s writing felt more comfortable than observing imaginary programmer Russel in his natural habitat. Paul writes from the first person and his book reads more like a conversation with a friend. Unlike Thomas and Rich, Paul does not work for SAP (sic!). Other SAP customers should really appreciate his insights in this book (and on SCN).

To address the concern expressed by another reviewer – yes, there are "monsters" in this book instead of our beloved orders, invoices and accounting documents. But being capable of looking at one object and seeing how it can relate to another project is an essential skill for any programmer. Also keep in mind these books are written using the IDES systems where limited business data is available.

We don’t use 7.4 yet where I work, but even after reading just a couple of chapters it made me re-think what I am doing today and search for the opportunities to improve. If you want to become a better ABAPer – get this book.

An effective antidote to "Terminator Management"

In this volume, John Fleming and Jim Asplund present and then examine with both rigor and eloquence what they characterize as "a new set of rules and a different way of thinking about managing [a] company's complex human systems, which we believe can serve as an antidote to Terminator Management. It's about a model and an approach that we call HumanSigma."

Many of those who read this brief commentary have seen the second Arnold Schwarzenegger film in which the Terminator acknowledges to John O'Connor (portrayed by Edward Furlong) that he has been programmed not to think. Fleming and Asplund suggest that is also true of a common management style, "an institutional mind-set that views people - customers and employees - as a necessary evil, a nuisance, or in extreme cases, as adversaries in doing business. Rather than viewing people as the reason a business exists, the Terminator School of Management views them as impediments to business that breed inefficiency, cost, and errors."

They offer HumanSigma as an alternative, indeed an antidote to that mind-set. They characterize it as a "map of the terrain" within which employee-customer encounters occur. They recommend five "new rules" that are best revealed within the narrative, in context. These rules have been validated by studies of 10 million customers and 10 million customers around the globe. They note that a recent Gallup study of 89 companies showed that the companies that built a critical mass of engaged employees grew earnings per share at 2.6 times the rate of low-engagement companies. Fleming and Asplund's conclude their book with the assertion that people who own their improvement makes them "more innovative, productive, and confident. Are there a better set of characteristics for companies facing an unknown future? We think not, and millions of employees and customers agree." As do I.

This book will transform the way you think about your company's employees and customers.

You have heard several business leaders say something along the lines of "people are our greatest assets". But from an accounting and financial perspective, more focus is given to tangible assets that are easier to put into metrics than to intangible things like the contributions of humans. This model was alright for the industrial age, in which approaches such as TQM and Six Sigma (and their emphasis on materials and processes that behaved predictably) resulted in improved production. However, over the last few decades the center of gravity of business has gradually shifted from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. For sales and service firms, value creation is dependent upon human interactions (between employees and customers) that are not as consistent and predictable as materials and processes.
HumanSigma is a model and approach that will transform the way you think about your company's employees and customers, and the interaction between them. The concepts in this book are drawn from research involving over 10 million employees and 10 million customers across the globe. This book presents an alternative to what the authors call "Terminator Management", in which customers and employees are considered a necessary evil of doing business. Through five new rules, examples, case studies and research drawn from a variety of sources, the authors explain how to improve the performance of human assets. This book will help you think of employees as assets to be optimized, instead of costs to be minimized.
Like many other Gallup books, this book links employee and customer engagement to financial indicators. However, you would need the help of Gallup for advanced tasks, like determining the HumanSigma score (a number that "summarizes the overall effectiveness of the employee-customer encounter that is reliably related to that unit's overall financial vitality") at a local unit level. That said, this book contains great concepts that will be valuable to all leaders and managers. I also recommend two other Gallup books - First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently and 12: The Elements of Great Managing.

Human Sigma

I am a Doctoral student studing Strategic Leadership. This book is a great resource for people leading campaigns to improve and increase their business's effectiveness and competitive position. By clarifying the differences between Six Sigma and Human Sigma considerable effort can be saved by focusing resources to affect positive outcomes. Gallup's research
builds a solid foundation that challenges the old tenants of usefulness
about customer satisfaction and surveys. This is a fairly thin slice of the process of building out strengths based organizations, but an important one. You may have to read several of their other works to fully comprehend the significance of this book. The field needs a good follow up book on how to build out human sigma in organizations. Gallup saves this (the really good stuff) for their consulting practice. It is a good read. KC in Lincoln,NE.

Very thorough analysis of the root words of the original languages related to meditation. It'd be beneficial to hear an external source evaluate the coverage of rabbi's and commentators referenced and to share any basis for alternative conclusions reached. To my current knowledge, this is worth the read, however high caution and prayer recommended when considering repeating its practices ...

*This book, Meditation And The Bible, is still one of the most important books I own. After so many years, I still refer to this book when wanting to have an academic view of a verse or a word, refresh my memory on the importance of meditation or just wanting to revisit his conversation on the behavior and spiritual habits of the prophets.

**The book is broken down into many sub-topic of meditation:

1. The Tradition-- the behavioral habits of the prophets
2. The Prophets-- A look at historicity, philology and the Divine Names
3. Verbal Archeology-- The expanded use of and the interconnection of the Psalms, prophetic passages, and psychological preparation.

If there is one thing you'd find consistent throughout this book, it's this: this book is essentially the study of and the use of words: the Divine words, in particular. Rabbi Kaplan uses and extensive bibliography to support his thesis of the meaning of words as it pertains to passages ("parsha").

*** This is an academic book. It can be read as a stand-alone book or as a reference for a bible study. I suggest that a separate notebook be kept just for this book as it is very in-depth and there are exhaustive conversation regarding root words, and passages.

**** I can't over emphasize this book. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, of Blessed Memory, produced one of the most important scholarly works to the Bible, since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Meditation is a largely misunderstood subject and often dismissed as a relic of Oriental mysticism, or worse, as an introduction to the occult as stated by the conservative Christian wing. What it is, however, is an invaluable tool for spiritual growth.

As with all things that help us to grow, wisdom and self-discipline are the keys. Meditation and the Bible, provides the foundation and Rabbi Kaplan's book, Jewish Meditation: A Practical Guide provides the exercises.

"Meditation for Fun and Prophet"

The lore is that Rabbi Kaplan, the author, died at the tender age of forty-six because G-d felt Kaplan had exposed enough of His secrets and decided it was time to recall this particular soldier. This book does nothing to undermine that hypothesis. Rabbi Kaplan, arguably the most prolific, cogent, and accessible of writers on Jewish esoterica and mysticism, explores how the Torah's Prophets used meditation as a tool to foster their prescience. The book also serves as an incisive gloss on aspects of the Torah, explicating the esoteric meaning underlying various elements of it. The section on Psalm 119 alone is worth the price of the book. Kaplan's objective in all of his works is to get at the heart of Judaism, to use the form to understand the substance. Meditation and The Bible is an important part of his oeuvre. Irrespective of one's religion, this book instils the sense that the reader is being let in on secrets of The Bible previously unknown to all except true Initiates, whoever they might be. Add it to your Kaplan collection. If you don't have a collection of his other books, this should inspire you to start one.
