best introduction to international economics

I have taken a few international economics courses and of all the textbooks this was by far the easiest to read and understand. The authors do an excellent job of making the models clear by giving detailed examples. This is one book I am definitely not selling back to the bookstore at school.

A great resource

This text book is a wonderful resource for all wanting to learn more about economics in the international arena. It is packed full of facts, graphs, and explanations. One problem I did find in this book is that it tried cover too broad a field. If it would have concentrated on one specific topic like the international economics, and left out the finance, it could be a much stronger work. I grew tired of hearing "as you already know..." It could have not made so many assumtions about what students already knew and used the extra area to cover them. All in all, it was a helpful resource for extra learning, however, I would suggest looking further for a book that will stand alone in teaching an international economics course.

My friend Don Yaeger has hit a home run with his new book Great Teams. Being a successful basketball coach I have studied how to build a successful team extensively. Don has many great ideas on how effective teams are built in sports as well as in the business world. He did extensive research and interviewed many of the best coaches of athletic teams as well leaders in the corporate world. If you are a leader of any type of team you gain great insight from reading Don's book. Highly recommend you read it! I could not put it down.

This is a good book to use in understanding what it takes to run a business successfully. The author uses stories about championship teams to illustrate people strategies that business can use to inspire, motivate and focus organizations. While none of the concepts are new, the straightforward writing style makes the material easy to understand.

This is the opposite of a fairy godmother story, and that’s a very good thing. Baby-eating witches are way more fun. Carroll’s elegant drawings and lush colors are a perfect match with McCoola’s lighthearted and surprisingly heartfelt words.

I fell in love with Emily Carroll's work when I first discovered Through the Woods last summer. Her fairy tale with a twist short stories are deliciously dark, and they have just the right playful or romantic elements in just the right places. I've been eagerly looking forward to a new book from her, and this one is, sort of. Baba Yaga's Assistant is written by Marika McCoola, and Emily Carroll's fantastic illustrations bring the story to life.

Masha is a lonely teen who misses her grandmother, the only mother figure in her life since her mother has long since passed away. When her distant father begins a relationship with a new woman with a bratty daughter, Masha flees home and decides to become Baba Yaga's assistant.

Baba Yaga tests Masha, both mentally and magically. Masha is able to rely on her own wit and knack for magic, in addition to the stories that her grandmother told her to prove that she has what it takes to be Baba Yaga's next assistant. But when the darker stories about Baba Yaga prove to be true, Masha will have to figure out a way to not only pass her tests, but outsmart her altogether.

I really enjoyed the many different incarnations of Baba Yaga, and how McCoola incorporated many stories about her character within the narrative. Baba Yaga may remain somewhat of an enigma, but we learn a lot about Masha from her determination and sensible approach to dealing with Baba Yaga's pranks and tricks. Carroll's colorful artwork does a wonderful job at capturing both the playful and dangerous sides of the Baba Yaga myths, and the desperation that Masha feels when she leaves home. I only hope that there are more tales about Masha in the future, because I was very sad when this book ended!

Captures the Spirit of Baba Yaga, With Some Bonus Sly Humor

I almost gave up at the start of this book because of the heroine's unrelenting angsty moping. But be patient, after the setup and then the appearance of Baba Yaga the book really takes off.

We start with our heroine Masha. Her beloved mother died when she was a child, leaving her to be raised by a distant father and a loving, wise, romantic and possibly magical grandmother. Then grandmother dies, although we get to know her well through numerous flashbacks. Distant Dad suddenly decides to remarry. We get an actually very nice step-mother and a horrible, bratty little step-sister. At this point Masha decides to run away and seek out Baba Yaga, who needs a new assistant. Also at this point I would have been fine if Baba had just eaten Masha and called it a day.

But wait. In the woods, confronted by Baba Yaga's chicken leg house, Masha transforms into a resourceful, funny, clever and spirited heroine. Baba Yaga turns out to be full of sarcastic wisecracks. We end up with a very entertaining battle of wills between these two. The fun angle is that as Baba Yaga sets tests for Masha, Masha has to flash back to old Baba Yaga stories and to tales told to Masha by her grandmother in order to figure out how to pass the various tests. That's how we end up getting a mix of old-fashioned Baba Yaga and modern Baba Yaga. It reads like an anthology of Baba Yaga stories, but all tied together into the story of Masha's trials.

The inspired illustrations really help carry the day. Masha is the least well realized character, sometimes being drawn in a bland and flat style and sometimes drawn with a little oomph. The illustrator had to distinguish between present day action, flashbacks, and Masha's remembering of the old folk tales, and she used different drawing and coloring styles to try to keep these different aspects of the story distinct. That worked pretty well. In any event, Baba Yaga is always sharp, crazed and compelling on the page. (See, the book cover.) The same is true for her house-on-chicken-legs, which has quite a personality of its own.

So, there's a lot going on here, but the bottom line for me was that this seemed to be a very inviting and accessible intro to the old Russian tales, and nicely drawn and written for a middle grade reader. That was a tough order to fill, and I'd call it a success.

Really enjoyed this one

Masha’s father hasn’t been there for her, not since the death of Masha’s mother long ago, or the recent loss of the grandmother who raised her. Now he’s marrying a woman he hasn’t even introduced to Masha previously. Not okay! So Masha answers an ad to become Baba Yaga’s assistant. Armed with the stories her grandmother told her about the witch, she sets out to pass the tests she’s given as part of the job… without betraying her own conscience. Masha is smart and capable, which makes sense given she’s been basically alone for quite some time. (I really don’t like her dad, can you tell?)

The book blends Masha’s current trials with memories of her past. She’s trying to find her own place in the world, since her old one is gone. Some of the flashbacks are profoundly sad, but the overall feeling of the book is of Masha getting her feet under her. Carroll’s cartooning is skilled, handling the changes from past to present well. There is no happy reunion here, though Masha does talk to her father once more. But it’s her time to move forward.

Great story

I really like this whole series. The stories are entertaining, the characters interesting, and the imagery is engaging. My only complaint is that there is some poor copyediting both on the jacket and in the novel. For example, there are multiple homophone problems, including one right on the back cover. Occasionally there are words dropped in the text, or even sometimes letters reversed. While it is easy to get over this, it does not look good for the editor and publisher. That being said, I'm planning on reading the last two collections when they come out even with the errors.

Good Introduction, Useless Audio

After buying and working through most of what is available, I recommend this book as an introductory book on Serbian. It is just an introduction, though, and you could memorize the entire book without even reaching the intermediate level of proficiency. I say this, sadly, after having studied book after book and, though I have given lectures in Serbian, I failed to reach even a modest level of conversational proficiency.

Complete Serbian presents more vocabulary than most introductions and does a fair job of introducing the grammar without actually making a formal presentation of the rules. This method has the obvious defect that the material is presented without rhyme or reason, whereas in a traditional grammatical presentation an older student begins to grasp general rules that he can apply to a variety of situations. The authors assume their readers are illiterate idiots, and they could save a lot of space and time by teaching a little grammar. Still, it is a decent book and easier to use than the far more explicit and complete Introduction by Thomas Magner--which should be used in conjunction both to build vocabulary and learn the structure of the language. Still, Complete Serbian is well worth having and studying.

The audio files, by contrast, are virtually worthless. The speakers read without intonation or affect and at breakneck speed. I have spent a great deal of time in Serbia and no one talks this way, no one. The male speakers are particularly hopeless. It is as if they are in a race to get to the end before anyone can catch them, and along the way they are inarticulate to the point of being mush-mouthed. I wonder about their educational level. When I meet educated Serbs, I can take dictation from what they say, even if I do not understand them.

Like many Serbian men, the male speakers fail to make the tonic accents distinguishable. This is not a question of the rise and fall of the voice in other languages: rising and falling tones have a lexical and grammatical significance, and if one cannot hear them, mistakes can be made especially by novice speakers. (Montenegrins, by the way, have a proverbial tin ear, both as speakers and as singers, even though they have produced two of the finest poets in the language--Njegos and Matija Beckovic.) The women in these tapes are better and more articulate, but they often read like zombies.

There really is no good audio course for Serbian. The massive collections made by the FLS are hilariously unlistenable, far worse than the dialogues accompanying this text., and delivered in a harsh monotone that defies comprehension. Croatian is much better served by audio courses, but unless you are a fairly advanced student, you should not use Croatian audio if your desire is to learn Belgrade Serbian. Of course, they are the same language, but you would not listen to Lowland Scots if you were planning to spend time in London.

This book was good to start, but then randomly, it starts writing in cyrillic...without really teaching you how to read cyrillic. If I knew how, I would rate this book 5 stars.

This system is not good for a beginner

I speak Serbian. I've listened to the audio, twice. This system is not good for a beginner.
My sister-in-law bought the same system - to learn Serbian & she can't use it.

About the Author
David Knudson is founder and executive director of The National Historical Route 66 Federation (www.nationalroute66.org), which works to preserve and promote the road. Knudson founded the Federation in 1994 after completing a trip across the country, during which he was unable to locate old section of Route 66. The National Histoic Route 66 Federation is a worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to directing the public's attention to the importance of US Highway Route 66 in America's cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize he economies of communities along the entire 2400-mile stretch of road. Knudson and the Federation were instrumental in getting Congress to pass the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Act in 1999. Formerly a partner with the Los Angeles-based advertising firm of Walker, Knudson and Campbell, Knudson also serves on the advisory council of the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

I liked the book very much

Having grown up near Route 66 in Southwest Missouri, I have many fond memories traveling it. As it was the route we took every Saturday into "town" for shopping or that night to the movies, it was an important road. The most vivid memory was our families first and only vacation trip in the 1950s through the entire western half of the U.S. in our new 1953 Chevrolet. Reading this book brought back a lot of memories, plus new information that I did not know when I was a teenager, and how important the highway was to America. I have driven tens of thousand miles on it in my lifetime and some of it still exists near our family farm. I liked the book very much, and if one lets their mind go back to days gone by, it will bring warm memories I am sure.

Easy to read overview of Route 66, providing history, the roads demise, and recovery as a tourist attraction. Definitely makes me want to take time to explore this historic highway! Has interesting pictures, but would benefit from having more maps.

Very interesting

This book is so interesting as it shows how D�rer was constructing the human figure. He used geometry and many different proportional systems. There is even one heroic man of ten headlengths.
Needless to say his artistic ideals were very different from those today.

I would highly recommend this book to all interested in figure drawing as well as the history of art. You will come closer to actually understanding such a wonderful artist as D�rer. You will also get to see how hard he was working so that he could truly understand and master the human figure.
His work in this book is very impressive.

Kindle version has deficiencies

I would love to give this Kindle title more stars. Here's what needs to be fixed

1. I cannot access the Table of Contents from either my Kindle or Kindle for Mac Application.
2. If you go to the index, topics have no corresponding links / page numbers.

Because of these deficiencies, this title is not as useful to my practice as it could be.

Publisher, please let me know when this title is updated.

Lots of editing errors

I bought the kindle edition of this. I use it as a reference when I'm working and used it to study for my boards. As someone else mentioned, not having a table of contents or page numbers is annoying, but the ability to search the text is nice. However, my biggest complaint is all the spacing errors which I find incredibly distracting. Not spelling errors but spaces when there shouldn't be and lots of merged words, almost every page and sometimes 3 errors in the same paragraph. It's a very dry text and not for layman, but a good textbook for the oncology clinician. The drug charts at the beginning of each drug section are great.

This book is a great, in-depth look at chemotherapy and the pharma involved with each drug. It has a little bit of the molecular targeted therapies, but was written just as these were coming on the market. It is far to detailed for someone just looking for general information but great for practicing oncologists looking for MOAs.

Along the way, Edward learns to love the people he encounters. Edward Tulane is a china rabbit with an extensive wardrobe. He belongs to 10-year-old Abilene, who thinks almost as highly of Edward as Edward does of himself. Even young children will soon realize that Edward is riding for a fall. And fall he does, into the sea, after mean boys rip him from Abilene's hands during an ocean voyage. Thus begins Edward's journey from watery grave to the gentle embrace of a fisherman's wife, to the care of a hobo and his dog, and into the hands of a dying girl. Then, pure meanness breaks Edward apart, and love and sacrifice put him back together--until just the right child finds him. With every person who taouches him, Edward's heart grows a little bit softer and a little bit bigger. Bruised and battered, Edward is at his most beautiful, and beautiful is a fine word to describe the artwork. Ibatoulline outdoes himself; his precisely rendered sepia-tone drawings and color plates of high artistic merit are an integral part of this handsomely designed package. Wonderful! But may not be quite right for some kids.

Review written by a 9 yo kid who loves all Kate DiCamillo's books: "This book is about a china rabbit who does not know how to love. He lives on Egypt Street with a young girl called Abeline. Edward is spoiled by Abeline. So spoiled that he gets everything that he could dream of and he never gives anything back not even...love. One day, Abiline leaves to London taking Edward with her on a ship called "Queen Mary". Soon after they board, Edward is thrown overboard by two mean boys who steal Edward from Abeline. Edward begins to drawn untill he reaches the bottom of the sea. After several years, there comes a big wave. The wave was big enough to lift Edward up and take him to the shore. From that day on, he begins to have emotions, feel appreciative and grateful to be alive.
Edward meets many new friends and one by one he begins to love them. But no one was his true owner. After many years of changing owners Edward meets the end of the cycle. I am not going to tell the end of the story and I think that you will love it and will be surprised with the unexpected ending. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, is an extraordinary, magical story but it is a book that can have a bit of a troubled plot for younger kids so I suggest you read it with an adult if you are younger than eight." review by 9yo kid from Isabela's Book Nook blog (isabelasbooknook.com), a blog for kids books review.

One of the all-time best

The little ones were hooked immediately. During chapter one, our nine-year-old was complaining, "this is a baby book. This is lame." OK, I get it. A young boy is fair to be suspicious of a story about a doll. A couple more chapters and he was quiet. A few more and he was begging for the nightly chapter.

It's tough to explain the premise of this book while doing it justice. It's about a porcelain rabbit who does not appreciate his good fortune, but comes to know love in a journey worthy of Odysseus. The book is sweet without getting too syrupy. There were times when I even found myself getting choked up. The emotion is so well-delivered and genuine.

If you like a long set-up like I do, this is one of the best. At the worst, Edward's situation seems utterly hopeless. More than once, it seems like Edward's journey is at a dismal end. But that doesn't sound like the way a "Miraculous Journey" ends, does it?

This book was very deserving of its "Top 100 chapter books of all-time" status that led me to it. It is a wonderful choice for reading to elementary school children. You will not be disappointed. It is one of the best.

My daughter loved this book!!

We only bought this at the recommendation of my daugter's teacher. Originally, my 10-year old daughter wanted to take (what she thought would be) the easy way out and read Diary of a Wimpy Kid for her book report. She thought she was sly because most of those books are pictures anyway, so it wouldn't be much reading. Her teacher said she would allow that, but recommended that she try this book instead. As soon as this book was delivered, my daughter started reading. After a few pages, she commented how incredibly sad this book was, and I thought that was it. I didn't think she'd even give it a chance. Needless to say, she finished the book and LOVED IT! She was having a really hard time getting enough substance out of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book to write a book report about, but once she read the Tulane book, the report just flowed out of her. It was amazing. She loved the book, and I think she got something out of it. I feel like she learned about loyalty and appreciation for the people who care for you.
