Great book!

Robert Herd did a wonderful job in presenting key elements of the esoteric/spiritual tradition and showing how they relate to different movements- Freemasonry in particular, with some Rosicrucian and Templar connections. This would be a great introductory book for any Freemason who seeks to understand how the philosophical sciences have been passed down over the millenniums to the current system that is worked today. He provided a great summary of different traditions throughout history. It would make a great companion book to Timothy Hogan's Entering the Chain of Union. I particularly liked his exploration of the life of Pythagoras, and he showed very well that there is evidence of ancient Egyptian initiation practices and that the philosophical thought from that time was passed down. This is a great book which should be studied by any Master Mason hoping to understand the origins of the initiatic tradition which they inherited! I will be recommending it to my lodge and anyone else who is interested in the mysteries!

This is an extremely well written and easy to read book! The holistic perspective offered allows the reader to make connections that perhaps even the author had not made. Though the complexity of the topic is high, the author has done an amazing job writing in a style that speaks to even the most basic reader. I would recommend this book to any who seek more Light in Masonry and to those seeking to understand what Masonry is and where it (potentially) came from! Well done WB Herd!

I just finished reading "The Initiatic Experience." Bravo, Robert Herd! I believe Brother Herd has done considerable justice to the body of Masonic literature, and provided a modern and very approachable understanding of the origins, history, and purpose of the transmission of light in regards to Masonic Initiation.

I've read countless books on the topic, but this is the first I've read that really gets to the root of the purpose of initiation, as it relates to the meaning of bringing a candidate from darkness to light in a spiritual sense. I also very much appreciated the inclusion of the role of the Initiators, and the critical aspect they play in energy transmission to the candidate.

I hope to see more books of this quality from this author!

I am extremely angry with the lie she tells about how she gleaned this information and do not recommend anyone else give her any

This is bulls***. None of this was collected from secret emails or private conversations. It's a collection of quotes from various interviews over the past few years. There was not a single thing in this book I didn't myself already know and read. I can even tell which articles and interviews she took each statement from. I am a huge fan of his and have watched every panel and read every interview. She misrepresented this book and how she acquired the information she put in it. I am extremely angry with the lie she tells about how she gleaned this information and do not recommend anyone else give her any money for something they can google for free.

About the Author
Dr Hoffer first worked for Purity Flour Mills in the early 1940s, where he persuaded his employers to enrich white bread with vitamins B-1 (Thiamin), B-2 (Riboflavin), and B-3 (Niacin) which had been stripped away from the natural grain in processing. While he was Director of Psychiatric Research for the Province of Saskatchewan from 1950-57, he developed vitamin B-3 treatments for cardiovascular disease and for schizophrenia. In his research with schizophrenics, he discovered an extraordinarily high level of LSD in their urine, leading him to investigate the therapeutic properties of hallucin

This complete yet concise, easy-to-read book is an elegant summary of what Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, learned about schizophrenia during his 60 years of research and clinical work. Hoffer developed the most successful, drug-free treatment of schizophrenia known today. It enabled roughly 75% of his schizophrenic patients to function, attend school, hold jobs, and have a "normal" life. In the holistic medical world, he is a revered pioneer, physician, and scientist, who developed the first biochemical theory to explain schizophrenia, the first nutritional/biochemical treatment for it, and conducted the first double-blind studies in the field of psychiatry. Hoffer founded the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine, that has taught integrative treatments for all mental illnesses to physicians for 30 years, as well as the International Schizophrenia Foundation, while authoring 36 books and 600 publications. This book was written at the end of his life. Patients, parents, and practitioners will not find a better guide anywhere.

This is NOT FOR DUMMIES!

Learning a foreign language isn't easy but this set allows your eyes and ears to work together! I bought this because I'm traveling to St Bart's and want to acquire some profiency in French. Regular guide books give you phrases and words with phonetic pronunciation but hearing a French person pronounce the word itself far surpasses sounding out a written phonetic pronunciation. I, for one, was very pleased with the three CD's and the book. I feel they worked very well together. Also, the book itself is small enough to carry in your purse or pocket and provides a quick reference as you travel.

A Good French Language Disc Set

I enjoy the approach of this language lesson set as it divides words and phrases into useful categories such as greetings, calendar, questions, etc. My only complaint is that one of the French speakers, not the English speakers, is not as clearly spoken as some other language disc sets I also use. Otherwise, I think it is very useful when teaching one's self to bring in all the sources possible, giving the learner a variety of inflections and approaches. This is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

About the Author

Patrik N. Juslin is associate professor of Psychology at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he teaches courses on music, emotion, perception, and research methodology. He completed his PhD in 1998 and became associate professor in 2004. Juslin has published numerous articles in the areas of expression in music performance, emotional responses to music, music education, and emotion in speech. In 2001, he edited the volume Music and Emotion: Theory and Research together with John Sloboda. Juslin is associate editor of the journals Music Perception and Musicae Scientiae. He is a member of the International Society for Research on Emotions and received ESCOM's 'Young Researcher Award' in 1996. Alongside his work as a researcher, he has also worked professionally as a guitar player.

John Sloboda is Emeritus Professor at Keele, and honorary Professor of Music at Royal Holloway University, London. He has been a member of the School of Psychology at Keele since 1974 and was Director of its Unit for
the Study of Musical Skill and Development founded in 1991. John Sloboda is internationally known for his work on the psychology of music. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and has been President of both the Psychology and General Sections of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as President of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music, where he serves on
the editorial board of it's journal Musicae Scientiae. He was recipient of the 1998 British Psychological Society's Presidents Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychological Knowledge, and in 2004 was
elected to Fellowship of the British Academy. He is author of over 150 publications in the field of music psychology.

The good... the ugly.

Saving one from having to purchase the many different books in the field, if you are just getting into it, the content of the book and format are both useful and enjoyable. But the physical product is so flimsy, to call it a hardcover is an exercise in denial. For a book of this size (and price) that would be well-handled for a long time, yet to be bound less securely then your average telephone book, one can only wonder what they (OUP) could be thinkun' (DOH!). Has Oxford been taken over by a generation of comic book readers?

So ***** for content but ** for physical quality (the paper is quite alright).

But I am not opinionated (no sir).

Unlike its predecessor, Music and Emotion, this Handbook is not focused, covers many areas that are not empirical and barely affective, and therefore is less valuable than the more concise book.

I remember enjoying the bounty of the land with my grandparents - leeks, real maple syrup, venison, wild strawberries, and shin shang. What is shin shang? The book covers topics such as: ginseng cultivation, history, harvesting, hunting and conserving wild ginseng, and use of ginseng in traditional herbal medicine.

This book told me everything I wanted to know about finding ginseng in the wild -- yes there is wild ginseng in the United States, and it is valuable. The detail was amazing, as was the history of the American plant dating back to George Washington. I learned how to grow ginseng and prepare it for sale. I also found a list of businesses that sell the seeds to get you started, and a list of buyers who will purchase all the ginseng you can find or grow. The color photos were a real help. Best of all, I found over $100 of ginseng while hiking one day. What a trip!

Exellent Book! Couldn't stop readin

Pros: goes over almost all the ginseng growing information you would want to know. In good detail and well explained. You are not left wondering about anything... you know like when you buy other books and can't figure out what they are talking about or they leave out entire explanations NOT on this book... I literally sat down started reading, went to bed, woke up started reading again and finished by end of morning. Didn't set it down other than to sleep... very easy read and worth it.

Cons: Could use more illustrations or even schematics would be helpful with their descriptions though not necessary and the price is pretty high for the hardback so I got the cloud version and read it on my computer.
