Just what I was looking for!

I just spent several days online researching medicinal uses of CBD/hemp oil. I read articles, explored websites, perused product information from various hemp oil producers and queried folks on facebook. But the more I read, the more confused I became.

I knew that I wanted to try hemp oil. I had heard about the many health benefits of CBD and was hopeful that it might provide some relief for my chronic Fibromyalgia and Arthritis pain. But I couldn't find information on dosage or explanations of the uses of the various forms (drops, capsules, creams, etc.). But thankfully, while reading conflicting reviews of different CBD products on Amazon, I came across this book. Hooray! I immediately downloaded it and was able to read it in a little over an hour.

The book has just enough scientific and medical info to explain how and why CBD works as medicine; this gave me confidence that hemp oil is not just a fad, placebo or snake oil. Much of the research cited is from US government studies as well as universities (and there are plenty of citations and footnotes for those who want to go to the source). The author is clearly very well educated on the subject, and his experience in nursing and drug counseling are a real plus, adding to my confidence.

It's less of a "how-to" and more of a "why not?", if that makes sense. The author was careful not to prescribe; he didn't tell me how much CBD I should take. But he did give examples of the range of dosages used by people and suggests that it's a good idea to go "low and slow"; start at a low dose and increase slowly, preferable under a doctor's supervision. I now feel informed and confident enough to go forward and try this new/ancient medicine!

To the author: Bravo! You have shed light and reason on an important subject and provided a valuable service to a suffering public. You have my gratitude.

(A humble suggestion: you might consider taking the "nursing" reference out of the title. While the book would clearly be useful for those in the nursing profession, it is equally important and accessible to the lay reader, and I fear you might lose many potential readers who assume that it's a book written primarily for nurses. I almost passed it by for that reason; I'm glad I didn't! Also, I hope that you will decide to offer the book in a print version as well; some folks don't have access to e-readers; and some of us just prefer having a hard to copy to underline and highlight and reference repeatedly; it's just easier in "book" form! I would definitely buy a hard copy, if you decide to offer one.) Thank you again for your fine work. Good luck to you!

The decade of the 1890s is quite compelling; it represents the high flowering of an older, quaint America together with social, political, and intellectual trends that would move the nation rapidly into the modernity familiar to us today. Brands (history, Texas A&M) has produced a workmanlike survey of the period, concentrating on traditional economic and political topics. The familiar emphases include labor strife, slum life, the robber barons, and the Spanish-American War. Readability (and research value) would have been enhanced by greater concern for intellectual and social issues. Emergent communication and transportation technologies, the purity and temperance movements, and the changes in popular entertainment are valid scholarly topics that would have added interest. Brands's book will be useful as a term-paper source but will probably not attract many general readers.

History doesn't repeat itself but rather presents similar patterns, and Brands detects several areas of continuity between fin de siecle American anxiety and the current angst of this millennium's expiring decade. To author Henry Adams, the country in the 1890s was deteriorating into a miasma of ailments; contemporary pessimists have their own list of societal complaints. The national obsession, race, bubbles in categories recognizably analogous to the Booker T. Washington-W. E. B. Du Bois debate, pitting economic self-improvement against vigorous assertion of rights. Immigration was and is a volatile issue. And current problems of foreign policy have detectable antecedents in the "splendid little war" with Spain. Were these topics intractable or unresolvable, no reformers would ever come forth, but in the 1890s they appeared in force, boosted by the 1893 depression. Reform built up to Bryan's famous "cross of gold" speech; yet Brands fastens on lesser known but equally colorful characters like Jacob Coxey, who led the first march-on-Washington protest to press labor's demands against the decade's powerful magnates, such as Carnegie. A Wealth of Knowledge

After the Civil War and Reconstruction, America was witnessing revolutions in every field. Not only in industry were there innovations, but in politics, economy, and society as well. These changes, including the emergence of multi-millionaires like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan, labor unions, and the fight for free silver, continued well into the final decade of the 19th century. The 1890's was a time of unrest in America with corrupt politicians, an agrarian downturn, and other problems. H.W. Brands tries to get a hold of this turbulent age in The Reckless Decade: America in the 1890's.
Brands' objective in this work is to illustrate the rich history of the "reckless decade," while at the same time drawing parallels to the modern day. His introduction serves as a reminder of this goal. In it, he compares the end of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. Both periods felt the "brink of a new era... most pronounced in America's cities." The cities in both eras helped reshape the economy. Brands notes that the politics of both decades were entrenched in fear and weariness. Those of the 1890's feared the change of the lives of the farmers with industrialization, while those of the 1990's feared a "ubiquitous, iniquitous liberalism." These comparisons are offered in the introduction, but not given directly in the book.
Brands covers a startlingly broad selection of events in such a narrow timeframe of history. The competition between the business juggernauts, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan is presented in almost a narrative form, making a mundane matter of economics interesting. Brands spends a chapter discusses the "other half" of society, in distinct contrast with the aforementioned business magnates. He alludes to the work of journalist, Jacob Riis, in how immigrants managed to get by in the slums of New York. Much of the chapter is taken directly from Riis' gloomy portrayal of the ramshackle apartments. Brands discusses in depth the Spanish-American War, Jim Crow laws and segregation, and the national frenzy over gold and silver. One of the more interesting parts of the book was a retelling of the Homestead Strike of 1892. Brands depicts the event as having "the atmosphere a circus. (The better educated of the Pinkertons might have thought of a Roman circus with themselves as Christians and the strikers as the lions.)" The scope of the book misses very little: educational reform may be the only theme untouched in The Reckless Decade.
The book is written in a very approachable style. Brands is, at times, captivating in his narration of events. Unfortunately, the reading is also slow at some points. The author should be applauded, however, for his extensive research, as the material is exhaustive. The Reckless Decade encapsulates ten years of history in a mere 350 pages.

A Perfect Ten

H.W. Brands is one of our best popular historians, and he doesn't disappoint with this book about America in the 1890's. He starts the book with two tales that demonstrate the closing of the frontier- the final major land rush in the Oklahoma Territory, which occurred in 1893; and the fighting at Wounded Knee, in the Dakota Territory, in December 1890, which resulted in the deaths of Sitting Bull and many women and children (noncombatants) at the hands of U.S. Army cavalry troops. The Sioux Indians were left demoralized by this event. Professor Brands grabs our attention with the first sentence of the book: "Fred Sutton had watched the earlier rushes into Oklahoma; he had seen friends no smarter, tougher, or more discerning than himself grab homesteads; and when word came that the government in Washington was going to open up the Cherokee Strip to settlement, he determined that this time he'd get a piece of the action." Later on in the chapter, the author switches from the concrete to the philosophical, telling us what thinkers such as Frederick Jackson Turner and Henry and Brooks Adams had to say about the significance of the closing of the frontier. This balance, in addition to the gripping narrative style, is what makes Professor Brands such a good writer. The book is just plain fun to read, but it is also intellectually challenging. Later chapters deal with the growth and centralization of big business (Carnegie and Rockefeller); the importance of the financier (J.P. Morgan); the urban, immigrant poor and the role of the political machines (Tammany Hall); economic downturn and the plight of farmers; racial discrimination and the different philosophies of Black American leaders on how to improve the lives of Black Americans (Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois); the political battle over the Gold Standard vs. bimetallism (the Populist party, William Jennings Bryan); and the exercise of American power abroad (the Spanish-American War and Theodore Roosevelt). Professor Brands wrote this book in the mid-1990's and he points out some parallels between the two decades- the most obvious being the tendency of people to begin looking outside the political mainstream during periods of great economic uncertainty. During the 1890's people felt under stress from industrialization, economic centralization and also from the severe depression the country was going through. Americans in the 1990's felt the heat of global competition and the uncertainties involved in the ongoing transition from a manufacturing to a more service based economy. The author gently points out some similarities. He wisely doesn't take the analogy too far. As you can see, the book is brimming over with topics and ideas, but it is always a joy to read- not least because of the many fascinating characters who are portrayed. In the section on the rise of big business, Professor Brands entertains us with the story of the competition between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. Westinghouse originally made his fortune by inventing the railway air brake. When he decided to branch out into electricity, Edison wasn't amused. He muttered to a colleague, "Tell Westinghouse to stick to air brakes." Edison was working on commercializing direct current, while Westinghouse favored alternating current (which uses higher voltages). To try to influence public opinion, Edison had his technicians wire up stray cats and dogs to the higher voltages and switched on the current. Edison put out pamphlets implying that alternating current would do the same thing to people that it did to the unfortunate animals. And when Westinghouse got the contract to provide the electricity for New York State's "electric chairs," Edison remarked that prisoners could now either be hanged or they could be "Westinghoused." So, apparently "The Wizard Of Menlo Park" didn't spend all of his time inventing. He had a few moments left over to engage in some below-the-belt boxing!

Very readable history

"The Reckless Decade" is a very readable synthesis of biography, social history, intellectual history, and just good old-fashioned storytelling art. Brands's writing style is electric, his wit sharp, and his discretion as to when to use well-chosen quotations and when to render his own pithy judgments seldom erring.
A thoroughly enjoyable period history of a time very much like our own.

About the Author

Robert Jones did not necessarily start out on this career path. Robert showed promise as an artist as early as age 6 and was pushed, or maybe we should say, encouraged to pursue painting and drawing. He competed and won a scholarship to study at a prestigious art school at age 11. After seven long years of intense art training he wanted more and decided to get more. From there he attended a performing arts high school where he majored in theatre. It is there he first dabbled in makeup, applying painting principles to the face. Growing with three sisters he always had the opportunity to prove he was naturally gifted at working with hair. He was also able to put that talent to use in school performances. Upon graduating, his advisors expressed their belief that he should pursue his natural gifts. From there he attended school and worked to get his license to do hair.

After a number of years in a salon, he once again wanted more. With his life motto “just jump and figure out how to make it work later,” he got the opportunity to work with new models at an agency. From there one thing lead to another and the rest is history. Now with more than 20 something years in the beauty industry he has traveled the world working with so many amazing people.

His work has appeared in countless magazines such as Allure, Vogue, Marie Claire, InStyle, Shape, Life and Style, Glamour, Brides Magazine, and Elle. He has worked with celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Claire Danes, Selena Gomez, Eve Best, Sheryl Crow, Laura Linney, Natascha McElhone, Delta Burke, Diahann Carroll and many others. He has worked with beauty clients such as Mary Kay, Almay, Olay, Avon, Nexxus, Clinique, Chanel, Prescriptive and Christian Dior, as well as fashion clients such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales just to name a few.

Concealer

Concealer is probably the biggest factor in creating perfection (or as I prefer to look at it, the illusion of perfection). Your product formula is critical. This is especially true with concealer because different formulas give you different amounts of coverage and are created for different usages.

Concealer Formulas

Stick concealer is probably the most common and most popular. It gives you great coverage, and the formula is usually moist enough yet dry enough to conceal just about any discoloration.

Tube concealer is usually a more moisturizing formula due to the nature of the form it comes in. Very versatile due to its texture, it can give you a lot of coverage, or you can sheer it out to give a lighter amount of coverage.

Pot concealer really gives you complete coverage. The formula can vary from creamier all the way to drier. So depending on your formula choice, you can find one for anything you might want to cover.

Wand concealer is the sheerest of all formulas. It gives you the least coverage, but blends very easily, so it is a great choice if you are wearing minimal foundation and just want to conceal minor imperfections.

Pencil concealer gives you complete, fast, easy coverage for dots, spots, and veins. Its dry texture helps it stay put all day, and because it’s a pencil, getting it right where you need it is a breeze. I could not live without this.

Highlighting pen is not a concealer in the sense of a cover-up, but I am putting it here because it is part of creating the illusion of perfection. If your skin is rough, uneven, pitted, or wrinkled, a highlighting pen can work wonders when used together with your concealer. That’s because this product contains light-reflecting particles that help bring forward recessed areas of the face. So anywhere you have any type of indention, apply it and it will visually bring forward that recessed area, creating the appearance of smooth skin.

Concealer Color Choices

Depth level and undertone matter. Let’s talk about depth level first. When choosing a concealer, for the most part, you want a shade that is the same shade as your foundation or a shade lighter. That’s the theory, anyway. I will say that I almost always choose a shade lighter because you are lightening something darker than your skin tone. Just keep in mind that the darker the discoloration, the lighter your concealer will need to be, so be open to the idea that you might need one or two shades lighter than your foundation.

Now let’s talk about undertone. Once again, let’s divide all of you into two categories. You can get a lot of mileage out of concealers with yellow undertones. Yellow is the best color choice for severe discoloration on ivory/beige skin because it works to counteract most skin imperfections, including the purple of under-eye circles, the brown of age spots, and any ruddiness or red in the complexion. The more severe the imperfection—such as a port-wine stain or extremely dark circles—the more yellow you will want in your concealer.

On bronze/ebony skin, a golden-orange concealer for lighter to medium skin tones works wonderfully. For really deep tones of ebony, a warm brown concealer usually covers best. The more intense the discoloration of the skin, the more intense the undertone of the concealer should be so that it can correct more.

If you’re using a concealer that matches your foundation exactly, you may apply it either before or after your foundation. But if you’re using one that is lighter than your foundation, it is best to apply it first.

Great - But The Timelines are Hard to Hit

I enjoy Robert Jone's books very much, this is the third of his collection that I have purchased. His looks are very wearable and modern, the instructions are clear and he uses a nice range of skin tones, face shapes, etc., to display his creations. Ethnic groups are well represented here, the models are fairly young, appearing to be in their 20's - 30's ("young" being relative, of course). I also admire the fact that, outside of the brushes that he uses (which he also sells) his tools and makeup colors are easy to come by, and he creates a great deal of glamor with just a handful of basic, timeless colors.

Nothing here is edgy (Rae Morris) or an obvious homage to vintage style (Kevyn Aucoin), and there is an odd sort of sameness to the looks since each of the photographs, although beautifully photographed for detail, are staged in almost the identical manner. I have found that of these makeup styles, the ones that flatter me most are where the model has the same eye size and shape, since that is where Robert's focus is; the blush, lipstick application stray very little from look to look, varying only in color/texture/intensity.

My only issue is the 5, 10, 15, 20 minute timeline, which does not include the application of concealer, foundation, powder, or contouring. All of these looks start the clock running with the assumption that you have already prepared your face, which may not be an issue for someone with flawless, youthful skin - at which point steps can be achievable in the time indicated with a bit of practice. To his credit, Robert does an excellent job of going through the preparation process at the beginning of his book (probably his best guide ever), but, for me at least, the prep work takes a good 5 - 10 minutes on it's own. Such are the joys of advancing age and the ravages of time.

On the other hand, I have yet to come across any makeup routine that works for me in under 15 minutes, so this may just be an completely unobtainable goal on my part. If anyone out there can write that book, I promise to pay good money for it.

Final word: if you enjoy makeup and toying around with different looks you will find this a good addition to you beauty book library, extended timeline and all.

What a great book for everyone

Loved this book! Very stylish and modern looks, all of them absolutely suitable for everyday wear - some are for parties etc, though, but very elegant. This book could have a title "Elegant and polished everyday looks"! Detailed instructions for every look, with many pictures. A beginner can use it with great success, and a pro will find some nice ideas, too. Highly recommend this book to anyone. For a beginner: this one and R.Jones' "Makeup makeovers:Expert secrets..." (or his "Looking younger: Makeovers...") will make a great make up school for you.

Beautiful Book

I am a huge fan of Robert and I think he is the best MUA out there. Youalways look natural not overly made up and all of his looks in this book are very wearable. I am also a member in his Beauty Academy which is fabulous!!
I have 2 of his other books and couldn't imagine another one that would be better than the other 2. I don't think this one is so much better as different.My only issue with this book is I wish he would of put what brands he is using. Some of the shimmer contours are different than I have seen and would like to know what company makes these.I know other makeup artist who write books (Carmindy) always puts in her book the name of the makeup product and the company other than that this book is fun,helpful and the pictures are just beautiful. But next time I would like to see more mature women, these women are all very young.
