Very well-researched history of past and possible future ...

I am a Graham Hancock fan, and although this book is long-winded in some places (he takes great pains to explain the ancient archaeological megaliths he researched), I found the book fascinating. It is almost impossible to explain briefly what the book is about, but I'll try. He travels to Indonesia, Peru, Turkey and other places to investigate -- often almost unknown -- megalithic monuments or "buildings". Some are being investigated or researched by scientists, while investigation of places like G�bekli Tepe in Turkey might right now (due to the political situation) have come to a halt. In short, he did exhaustive research to prove that a great civilisation existed more than (roughly) 12,000+ years ago, who left their "fingerprints" -- these monuments -- in parts of the Northern hemisphere. This civilisation and its complete destruction circa 12,000 years ago, has been forgotten, except where it lives on in myths and legends. The destruction came about as the result of enormous shards of a comet which hit the earth sometime between 12,800 - 11,600 years ago. This destruction caused a new Ice Age -- and the humans who slowly over thousands of years emerged and built a new civilisation knew little about what had gone before. Hancock researched his facts very carefully, and mentions many other scientists who came to the same conclusions as he did. Basically he concludes that the megalithic pyramids and monuments he visits are much older than mainstream archaeology would admit or even want to admit. But you have to read this densely-written and well-researched book yourself -- I was flabbergasted at some of the explanations and facts he unearthed. And basically -- coming back to the Mayan calendar and modern astronomical research he concludes that -- give or take anything from the present day to 800 years hence -- the earth will once again cross paths with deadly comets, of which three (asteroids who are waking up like dormant volcanoes) seem to be developing in the asteroid belt, and apparently can be seen through telescopes. We are entering the danger period ... Wow, what a ride this book was! It was a slow read, as I am no archaeologist, but I enjoyed it and could hardly put the book down. I am impressed by the thorough research the author had done.

Dr Elina Vilar Beltr�n is a language instructor at Queen Mary, University of London. Modern languages education and accessibility have been her main areas of study since she started her post-doctoral training at King's College London. Other areas of interest are digital literacies, intercultural communication and language development in the study abroad context.Dr Chris Abbott is Reader in e-Inclusion at King's College London. He specialises in teaching and research around literacy, language and assistive technologies, especially with regard to students identified as having learning difficulties. He has led a number of research projects on aspects of technology and disability, and is the author of ICT: Changing Education (2000) and SEN and the Internet: Issues for the Inclusive Classroom (2002).Dr Jane Jones is Senior Lecturer in MFL Teacher Education at King's College London. Her research interests include the development and embedding of effective formative assessment practices in language teaching and learning, especially with student teachers, and the promotion of self-regulatory strategies by pupils of all abilities and all ages to manage their own learning.

Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Good Survey of American Music

I teach a course in United States music history at the high school level, and this college text is a good stretch for my students. It is clearly written, well organized, and provides great points for departure in my lectures. The accompanying CD set, though not perfect, is a convenient way to bring in examples and allows for some independent study. Music history teachers can augment the examples with their current CD holdings.
The text surveys "American" music, not just music of the United States, although that is in the majority. The distinction of American versus U.S makes for a good discussion point throughout the semester. We do not take the chapters in order (we begin with music of the early European settlers), and the book lends itself to that flexibility.
Although there may be better texts for specific music history topics, (i.e., Jazz or contemporary "serious" music) this is an excellent survey text for the advanced high schooler or college music history survey course. Term paper suggestions, questions for additional research and bibliography are included at the end of each chapter.

This is a concise edition of Daniel Kingman's previous book of the same title. I know of it having been used as a high school textbook on American Music.

Kingman's book begins with a great introduction of some of the various ethnic/folk musics of the American musical tradition: Anglo-American, African-American, American Indian, and Latino backgrounds. Part Two looks at music which germinated from the South-Country, Blues, and Rock. Other sections examine popular sacred music, secular music, jazz, a substantial section on classical music, and a small epilogue on other regional styles.

This text is good because it is not too difficult to read and interesting overall. Kingman does a good job of introducing the music and providing useful descriptions of each style.

His bibliographies at the end of each chapter are fantastic, and he also provides many useful project ideas which would work great for high school/college classes alike

Unfortunately, there are a host of problems. First, the section on jazz is too short (30 pages), as well as those on rock (25 pages) and musical theater (20 pages). Kingman also neglects to put each movement in its proper historical context. This does not seem to be an important goal for him.

Many courses teach either American Popular Music or American Art/Classical music, not both. There are better texts out there which are more specific. For a survey course on all American music, this can work, but will certainly need to be supplemented with primary source materials and information on jazz, rock, Broadway, and other areas.
