One of the more useful texts

Purchased this text for a graduate dynamic optimization in economics course at Rice. It is very well written with excellent examples. Did quite a few problems, they are well designed to illuminate the topics covered. Almost no useful coverage of numerical methods, which is what I most wanted to take away from the course. The emphasis is on theory, there is a decent section on static optimization and differential equations. Wish we could have used this text for math-econ rather than Rudin, it is more practical for applied economists (I'm doing a marketing PhD) who don't do heavy theory work that require the real-analysis machinery. Overall, an excellent text if you are not looking for numerical methods. I would suggest Adda and Cooper and Judd for application with numerical methods.

I am almoust sure that mathematicians and "orthodox" economists do not like this book but for graduates with a lousy background in and a certain degree of fear of mathematics it is a perfect tool to begin and get affected.

Je me suis jet� dans les �clats comme on tr�buche, corps chiffon, le ventre en d�combres. Je tremblais. Jamais je n'avais trembl� comme �a. Ma jambe droite voulait s'enfuir, me quitter, une sauterelle apeur�e dans les herbes d'�t�. Je l'ai plaqu�e � deux mains sur le sol. Elle saignait, ma jambe folle. Je n'avais rien senti. Je croyais que la blessure et le bless� ne faisaient qu'un. Qu'au moment de l'impact, la douleur hurlait son message. Mais c'est le sang qui m'a annonc� la mauvaise nouvelle. Ni le choc ni le mal, seulement mon jus poisseux. Mon pantalon �tait d�chir�. Il fumait. Ma jambe �lan�ait comme une rage de dent. Ma chemise �tait coll�e de sueur. J'avais pris mon sac, mais laiss� ma veste dans la voiture de Marwan, mes papiers, mon argent, tout ce qui me restait. Je ne pensais pas qu'un char d'assaut pouvait ouvrir le feu sur un taxi.

J'ai plong� la main vers la banquette arri�re, pris mon sac, cherch� ma veste, mon passeport, sans quitter la mort des yeux. Et puis j'ai renonc�. La gueule d'acier nous faisait face. Vacarme dans ma t�te.
- Il ne va pas tirer ! Il ne peut pas tirer sur un taxi !
Un losange rouge et un rond jaune �taient peints sur la tourelle. Figures famili�res de tableau d'�colier. Et aussi trois chiffres arabes au pochoir blanc. Marwan traversait la route, courb� en deux. Il marchait vers l'abri, un garage fracass�. Les murs �taient cribl�s d'�clats, noirs de suie. J'ai ouvert ma porti�re, couru bouche ouverte vers la ruine b�ante.

C'est pourtant un r�cit tr�s r�aliste avec par moments un style presque journalistique fait de d�tails pr�cis, d'informations coh�rentes. C est parfois po�tique avec des descriptions balzaciennes la barbarie est pourtant d�crite minutieusement elle remue notre �me et nous secoue, �branle notre qui�tude nous touche bien profond�ment. Avec s�r�nit� et assurance on assiste avec conviction � la descente aux enfers de Georges. Comme un destin in�luctable r�sultat de toute guerre, de toute violence et de toute trag�die de toute incompr�hension et de l'aveuglement de la surdit� des conflits et de la violence. La guerre nous an�antis elle nous d�pouille de notre humanit� chalandon le peint avec talent.

Combustion in its heyday

This is third of a continuing series of books (1955, 1966, 1981, 1993) known in the trade as "The Combustion Book." It collects the commentary and insights from boiler experts at Combustion Engineering (today's Alstom Power). This book and a competing volume from Babcock & Wilcox titled "Steam" represent the collected wisdom of American solid fuel firing expertise at its peak.

The material is written at an easy reading level for an undergraduate engineering text. Only in the 'Combustion Processes' and 'Performance Design' chapters did equations sneak into the text. There, you'll want to be comfortable with easy differential notation. The book was written before the days of desktop computers and is not a repository of heat transfer equations.

Joe Singer organized and coordinated a writing effort that involved many senior people in more than a dozen engineering and research departments. Because it was written just before word processors became common, it represents a monumental integration of field experience and fact checking. It presents material considered public knowledge at the time, so it does not give the details of specific field failure risks.

Pretty but odd

I love Orla Kiely stuff and figured this book would be both attention grabbing for my 5 month old and pretty to look at. While the pictures are great looking this book just doesn't make sense. Why am I telling my baby elephants are red and trees are black... I just find this odd.

Lovely book for young children

I bought this book for my daughter when she was only a couple of months old. The designs of the pictures are not only beautiful, but they also have a lot of contrast, which is nice for newborns to be able to focus on. My daughter seemed to especially focus well on the black and white trees. A few other positives: The pages are a nice sturdy cardboard, so it will survive the rough handling of a toddler. Each color page has an edge with paint swatch-style squares demonstrating different tones of each color, which I think is nice for teaching how each color can come in many different shades. The cover is beautifully cloth bound; that doesn't matter much to my daughter, but I feel like it's an added feature that I enjoy. I have always loved art, and I am excited when I find books that have a lovely design element I can share with my little one. I believe this is one that we will hold onto for some time.

I love the simple and vibrantly-colored design of this board book about colors. Each two-page spread has a color and an object (for example, Orange Car, Gray Boat, Red Elephant, etc.), and includes beautiful shades of the color and simple and chic pictures of the object.

My toddler loves looking at this book. I think the pages would actually be really cute hung in a nursery or play room. I definitely will be checking out Kiely's other board books (Numbers (Orla Kiely Board Books), Creatures (Orla Kiely Board Books), Shapes (Orla Kiely Board Books)). These would be excellent in any children's book collection!

About the Author
Dr. Charles A. Corr has been teaching and writing in the field of death, dying, and bereavement since 1975. He is a prolific contributor to this field, having been author, co-author, or co-editor of 30 books and more than 100chapters and articles in professional journals. Dr. Corr's professional work has been recognized by awards from the Association for Death Education and Counseling, , Children's Hospice International, the Center for Death Education and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation.

Donna M. Corr has worked as a nurse in a variety of critical care, oncology, and hospice settings. In addition, she was for 17 years a faculty member (rising from Instructor to Professor) in the Nursing Faculty of St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, and then a lecturer for two semesters at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her publications include five books and more than two dozen articles and chapters. Books edited by Donna and/or Charles Corr have received five Book of the Year Awards from the American Journal of Nursing.

Do NOT buy Kindle edition

The kindle edition is terrible! This edition is a horrible mess--paragraphs and sections of chapters are out of order, images are missing or mislabeled, and several quotes are listed as "Text not available due to copyright restrictions." Also, it is unavailable to read in the cloud application on your computer. Highlighted links do not bring you to corresponding sections. I will be requesting a reimbursement.

I am a scholar, counselor and thanatologist and read Death & Dying Life & Living as part of my continuing work in thanatology for ADEC (Association of Death Education and Counseling�). To my utter surprise I was delighted with the clarity and functionality of this remarkable text. I have worked a great deal of time with bereaved individuals that are in the throes of grief, facing a loss or actively dying and found this an insightful and valuable addition to my personal library.

This book allows professionals to authoritatively identify what they are working such as “anticipated grief” or allows you to employ specific societal terms such as “disenfranchised grief”. I was enriched by the significant exploration the authors gave the social, religious and gender- based issues associated with grief and dying.

By exploring the background of thanatology the reader is allowed to address the many theories as well as several specific theorists who define grief, bereavement and the comprehensive process of dying. I was very pleased to discover that the authors give the reader illustrations that are timely as well as portray modern events such as 911 in an authoritative as well as realistic manner.

I would highly recommend this book for individuals interested in the art of helping others with any type of grief or bereavement.

Important!

Having read Truefaced, this group's first book, I patiently awaited another opportunity to explore some of the same concepts. I have been a Christian for close to 40 years, and I have never heard some of the thoughts expressed in this book exactly the same way. While so many Christian books go into issues and symptoms, and I've read hundreds, this one drills down to the core issues of how we become separated from the true will of God. I know that I am not separated from His love, but I sure have a way of separating myself from feeling His love. Now, I understand why. It was a quick read for me, but now I look forward to reading it again and processing the many thoughts it has brought up for my life. In my opinion, this book is truly important.

The Cure is a must read

I gave this book 4 stars for two reasons- 1)I didn't have the study guide and 2)reviewers will be wondering 'Oh, here's someone that didn't max it out. What did he say about it?' This book is only 112 pages and you need to have, if you dare read it, a highlighter near you. It doesn't make any difference whether you believe in a Christian god or not, it will challenge you. Answer this 'Can I believe in a god that loves me inspite of myself? A god that doesn't feel sorry for me or pity me or is disappointed with me, but a god who waits for me to wake in the morning so He can show me what He designed for me to experience with him today? Can I learn to set aside the crap I've been taught and believe there is a god who loves me and calls me his child? I am the son/daughter of the God of the Universe! On my worst day-that's who I am. Well, if you want to read about what that looks like, if you want to see what that love looks like-a love you could not only have but then turn around and give away, then this is a book for you. If you're a non-Christian, it will challenge you. If you are a Christian, it will encourage and in many cases, begin a healing process you have long thought wasn't possible.

Yep, it was only 112 pages. Maybe that should have been my third reason I only gave it four stars.

Several years ago my world was rocked to its very core which sent me spiraling downward and yet at the same time searching for better answers for the "who am I" questions of life. At that time a friend gave me a copy of Truefaced and I began to discover the truth about who God is and who I am in relationship to God. The result has been a continued journey of revelation and discovery that has changed every part of my life. Am I "cured", not completely but I do know "The Cure" and He's working in my life as never before.
It's important that you know that I am a pastor and counselor in one of the craziest cities in the world - Las Vegas. As a pastor I'm always looking for new concepts to teach and new ways of helping people discover peace and freedom. I know the truths shared in The Cure work, not only because of the hundreds of people I've introduced these truths too, but more importantly, how they have changed my life.
Thanks to John, Bill and Bruce for taking the time to expand the Truefaced principles so they can be more effective in the lives of people who are searching for the answer to "who am I?"
I heartily recommend the book and will be forever grateful for helping me, and the help it's brought to others, in our discovery of who God is and who God says we are.
