Well-paced if antiquated

Like many of Michael Lewis' latter-day works, Liar's Poker is engaging, dissecting the birth of mortgage bonds and the dissolution of one of the 80s Wall Street's top earners. It's easy to catch the strokes of his later works in the descriptions of people and his wonkish simplification of the complexities of the financial markets.

Notwithstanding the novel's expert skewering of the Salomon Brothers' culture and the well-traced rise of what would one day become mortgage-backed securities, the greatest pleasure of the novel is the fall of the many Wall Street giants Lewis lauds that are now upon the dust heap of history. He calls out Lehman Brothers early on, giving us the chance to savor the irony that Salomon collapsed well before Lehman. The men that Lewis saw working as a junior employee at Salomon sowed the seeds of 2008 financial collapse, and with that firmly in our hindsight, Liar's Poker is a fantastic portrait of the very genesis of the rot that brought us low almost a decade ago.

My takeaways

Michael Lewis is very funny to go along with his insight into how the financial world works. Here are some major takeaways for me:

[1] Solomon Brothers showed excessive greed and always placed the firms interests above those of their customers and rich customers treat the bond [and stock] market like a casino. Middle class people who need a decent return to retire muddle along but the market rises and falls precipitously on the gambling mentality of the rich.

[2] Previous to 1980 bond markets were unregulated so when junk bonds were invented [and bond prices became volatile like stocks] it was not illegal to trade bonds on insider information. Traders will always be more nimble than government regulations and the system will always favor the dishonest few.

[3] At the end in his conclusions, he says that the principals at Solomon will remain "fat and happy". To me that is an oxymoron. They operate on the principal that money is everything. If it were true the US would be the happiest country in the world because it has the highest GNP. Fat people are unhealthy and being healthy and taking care of oneself is at least as important as being rich.

Also if a person is rich enough to buy five houses, he can only be in one place at a time...just like a poor person. If a person is impoverished, more money will make him happier. But after a person has enough money for all his needs, more money doesn't increase happiness. People who realize this can become truly happy.

How to lose faith in professional investment advisors in one easy read

I liked Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short”, so I decided to read his earlier book “Liars Poker”. “The Big Short” was especially interesting (dramatic, even) because it talks about the Great Recession (that is still so fresh in my mind). In comparison “Liars Poker” talks about Lewis’ early career in finance back in the early-to-mid 1980’s. So “Liars Poker” was less exciting than “The Big Short”, but it was more “broad brush” – and so more insightful about the basic workings of the Wall Street companies. This book destroys any myth that Wall Street is successful when they make their investor clients successful; Wall Street can be just as successful when dumping their losing investments by recommending those same “investments” to their ignorant, hapless clients. The book’s biggest lesson for the investor is “caveat emptor”. “Liars Poker” is humorous, eye-opening, disheartening, instructive – and entertaining.

About the Author
Stefano Marcelli graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1982. He has since trained in Acupuncture, Auricular therapy and Mesotherapy in Italy, France and China. He initiated the anatomical comparative approach in acupuncture research. He is the founder of the Italian School of Mesotherapy and has written ten books on acupuncture and Mesotherapy. He lives in Darfo Boario Terme (Brescia), Italy.

An invaluable clinical resource!

I found Stefano Marcelli's book to be extremely well written, inspiring, and practical. As an acupuncturist in clinical practice, it is obviously important for me to get the best results with my patients. The active points test is a simple way to confirm the efficacy and accurate location of which points I use. This book aims to troubleshoot problems and improve the performance of SQL Server queries by using Wait Statistics, how does it fare?

When SQL code is not running on the CPU, SQL Server records the reason why it is not running (e.g. blocking or waiting for IO to complete). Analysing these Wait Statistics (Wait Stats), and making changes based on them, can improve the performance of your queries.

Chapter 1 Wait Statistics Internals

This chapter opens with a discussion on what Wait Stats are: they indicate why SQL code is not running on the CPUs. They are not well-known to DBAs or developers. A brief history of Wait Stats is given, having existed in earlier versions of SQL Server, they became more usable with the advent of Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) in SQL Server 2005.

The chapter continues with a look at SQLOS, which provides operating system (OS) functionality, allowing SQL Server to take advantage of hardware improvements. Next, schedulers, tasks, and worker threads are discussed, and their work illustrated with the use of DMVs.

The chapter ends with a look at Wait Stats and how they relate to the various queues (i.e. running, runnable, and waiter list). The movement of queries between the queues is shown with examples.

This chapter provides a useful overview of what Wait Stats are, together with the SQL Server OS architecture, and the flow between sessions, requests, tasks and threads. There’s a reference to Tom Davidson’s helpful paper “SQL Server 2005 Waits and Queues” - which is still applicable today.

I don’t agree with everything that’s said. The technique is not new, indeed Davidson’s related paper dates from 2006. Additionally, people that deal with performance tuning will be very familiar with Wait Stats, it’s a well-known tuning technique.

This chapter contains well written discussions, helpful references to websites, inter-chapter links, example SQL code to support the assertions, useful diagrams, outputs, and practical instructions. These traits apply to the book as a whole.

You’re sure to learn a lot about the internal working of SQL Server from this book.

Sometimes, things are not how they initially seem e.g. high IO values might not mean the IO subsystem is slow, it might be there isn’t enough memory on the server. So, I would have liked to have seen a more corroborative approach between various tuning techniques (e.g. Davidson links Wait Stats with Perfmon queue metrics). Also, I felt sometimes there was too much hyperbole (e.g. Wait Stats is a relatively little used technique, and worthless without a baseline).

Despite these reservations, I enjoyed this book immensely, it contains lots of useful detail. It is certainly the next thing to read after Davidson’s paper on SQL Server 2005 Waits and Queues (available for free at: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966413.aspx). The book is highly recommended.

Great Edition of a Classic

I did not expect to like this book. However, reading Life is a Dream in the original Spanish was a delight. With the opposing translation it is even more enjoyable as the occasional unfamiliar idiom or obscure vocabulary within the text was easily cleared up. And the translation itself is solid throughout.

For those not familiar with the Spanish text, don't be discouraged; this is definitely the one of the most accessible Spanish classics. I would recommend it even to less advanced Spanish learners. (It's also short!)

This book is an excellent read and the format is easy to follow. You can compare the English and Spanish side-by-side, or read each one at a time. The story itself is one that still resonates in today's popular culture.

About the Author

Deborah Lipp was initiated into a traditional Gardnerian coven of Witches in 1981, became a High Priestess in 1986, and has been teaching Wicca and running Pagan circles ever since. She has appeared in various media discussing Wicca, including the A&E documentary Ancient Mysteries: Witchcraft in America, on MSNBC, in The New York Times, and in many smaller TV and print sources.

Deborah has been published in many Pagan publications, including The Llewellyn Magical Almanac, Pangaia, Green Egg, The Druid's Progress, Converging Paths, and The Hidden Path, as well as Mothering Magazine. She has lectured at numerous Pagan festivals on a variety of topics.

Deborah is a technical writer with a variety of skills. She lives in Rockland County, NY, with her son, Arthur, who tap dances, and two cats. I enjoyed this biography and it was very interesting to gain some insights about authors/people I like a lot through their books and works. At the beginning the "ritual"/"advice" section in each chapter felt wrong to me, interrupting the flow, but by the end of the book I got used to it. One thing I really found great was the openness about depression and treatment, as a lot of "spiritual" people still treat that subject as something weak and something that one has to work out without medication and without professional treatment, just by "spirituality" and I always thought, that is crap. Thank you so much, Deborah, for this openness. I myself had my coven kicking me in the ass that I finally went to a therapist :)...

I think this book should also be read by people who are not in the craft, so they get a better insight on Wicca and Paganism to get a bigger picture about what we do.

In some areas it did not grab me as much as in others, but altogether I liked it a lot so I think it is worth 5 stars (I intended towards 4 at the beginning), especially because it made it possible to dive into the earlier years of the craft and it felt so sincere. I am not Gardnerian but I enjoyed the point of view on the tradition that started it all. And after all: we are all humans and even a High Priestess has her better or worse days and that is something that Deborah Lipp brought over in a very good way. Respect!

Down to earth, honest, moving: I think it has it all and you can even learn something :). Thanks for that book.

Love Deborah Lipp, and this book is very interesting as it walks you through her journey to the wiccan path, and gives you helpful exercises and tips to assist in your own journey. She is an awesome writer and seems to be very down to earth. There are lessons for every pagan from novice to high priestess. Glad I purchased this book.

"Merry Meet Again" is a Triumph, and One of the Best Pagan Books of the Decade!

I've read a LOT of books on modern Wicca and Paganism. In the past 27 years, they number in the high 3-figures or low 4-figures. I've read many bad ones, quite a few good ones, and precious few excellent ones.

I say all of this because when I say that Deborah Lipp's book "Merry Meet Again" is one of the finest books I've read on the subject of Witchcraft/Wicca and Paganism in the last decade, I want you to know what I'm comparing it to. While most books on the subject attempt to cover the "how's" and "when's" of practicing the Craft, Deborah's book delves into the "why"... why she started on the path, why she chose the tradition that she did, and why she continues in it to this day. Oh, there's some "how to" segments as well... Deborah is, at heart, a teacher of the Craft, and she often breaks from her life narrative to give simple tips on how to do things such as protection spells, partner-aided grounding rituals, and the like. But, in the end, "Merry meet Again" is the story of a woman, a mother, and a Priestess of the Craft, and her incredible life thus far.

Of course, she covers the things one would expect her to... her marriage to the late Isaac Bonewits, her work with him to help build ADF, and the like. But she also covers things that many might not know about, such as Isaac's work in her Gardnerian coven, and the healing work she and Isaac did for Scott Cunningham. Especially riveting are her accounts of doing emergency healing magick for children of her coveners... and how her small community's finest moments happened on the edge of tragedy.

I think that one of the most inspiring things about her story is how Deborah has never stopped learning, and how she's constantly deepening her knowledge of her Craft. Even as a 3rd degree Gardnerian priestess, Witchcraft is an ever-growing, ever-revealing mystery, and Deborah brings across the wonder of discovery with a skill lacking in many authors. I think that one thing I appreciate most is how honest she is with her struggle against self-doubt. I often struggle with a crisis of confidence in my abilities... as a film-maker, as a writer, as a Wiccan Priest. No matter how often people say that they like the film I made, or a workshop I gave, or an article I've written, I'm often convinced that people are going to see through my facade "any day now", and decide that I've been this giant phony. Seeing someone as accomplished as Deborah Lipp struggle with the *exact* same feelings lets me breathe a little easier, and to quell the "nay-sayer within".

This book has touched me deeply. Thank you, Deborah, for sharing our story in such an open, honest way. Thank you for your dedication to the Craft, and for inspiring all of us to carry on and to keep discovering.

Seriously, if you only buy one book about Wicca or Paganism this year, make it this one.
