About the Author
Patricia Elliott was born in London, but grew up in Europe and the Far East. A voracious reader since childhood (where she had the resources of ten different school libraries), she also made up ghost stories to scare her friends! As an adult, she worked in publishing in London and in a children's bookshop in New York. She now teaches a course in children's literature at an adult education college, and is writing further novels. She lives in Barnes with her husband, two sons and a yellow labrador called Fingal. Her first book, The Ice Boy, won the Fidler Award for a first novel, was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award and the West Sussex award. Her second novel, Murkmere, has recently been longlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award. Booklist called her previous novel, The Pale Assassin, "excellent...A ghighly suspenseful survival tale" in a starred review.

Satisfying conclusion

This novel picks up where "The Pale Assassin" leaves off - with Julien and Eugenie in England - Dover to be exact. Eugenie settles in but soon becomes more than a little jealous of Julien's developing relationship with her cousin. Her cousin also is hiding a rather delicious and dangerous secret.

With La Fantome back in France La Scapel is sent to England once he discovers that she is there. The familiar face of Guy turns up - initially to Eugenie's delight, but she is conflicted about her developing feelings for Julien.

A wayward hot air balloon ride though sees Julien, Eugenie and co. back in the countryside of France - having only just escaped from the clutches of La Scapel. Eugenie discovers the fate of her brother and it is a race against time to be safe and rescue those who need it.

On the whole this was a fitting conclusion to the series. The characters are developed more in this novel and grow with the storyline. Truths are revealed about all the characters and the conclusion is satisfying without being over (or under) done. Only one scene annoys me because I still do not know what happened in the alley way and what took place - because it is too ambiguous for which character was involved. Apart from that it is a worthy read.

Fast and intense!

The Traitor's Smile is the sequel to "The Pale Assassin", and I enjoyed TTS a whole lot more. I felt like the story moved much faster in the second book, and the amount of fiction vs non-fiction was well balanced, keeping the non-fiction more interesting. ;) Suspenseful, clean, and intricate- this became one of my favorite YA historical fiction novels.

So Much Better than the First!

SUMMARY:

The Traitor's Smile starts right where the Pale Assassin ends, with Eugenie and Julien arriving in England. When a familiar face turns up, that of the traitor Guy Deschamps, Eugenie learns that her brother has been captured and will soon be sentenced to death for his aristocrat status and his failed plan to save the King. Guy delivers a ultimatum from Goullet, the assassin. Either Eugenie goes back to France and marries him, or her brother dies.

PROS:

1. There's less history than in the Pale Assassin, focusing instead on the story and characters, thus making it more attention grabbing and exciting than the first.
2. All the characters develop more. Especially Eugenie, who turns from a selfish, aristocratic brat to a lovable character.
3. I absolutely LOVED Hetta, Eugenie's cousin. Fearless Hetta frequently dresses up as a man to help bring about the change she wants to see, instead of sitting back and letting the men take care of everything. Originally her relationship with Eugenie is strained, but as the book progresses they soon become great friends.
4. Although there is less background history in the sequel, I still found that it gave enough to satisfy me, and was all very accurate and told in a way that made it interesting.
5. There is much more action with Goullet compared to The Pale Assassin.

CONS:

1. The minor love triangle. At the end of the Pale Assassin, Eugenie had Julien's heart and affection, but after arriving in England, Hetta soon falls for Julien too. I dislike love triangles, and I thought that this one was unnecessary to the story.
2. The ending turns out to be too good. I would have appreciated it more if one of the main characters had died. This is the French Revolution, after all.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. Also, if you read The Pale Assassin and thought that it was at least okay, I would say to read this one. All the flaws of the first book are resolved in the sequel. Great story for all ages!

He set up a "clinic" in his basement, bought slave "patients," and regularly performed surgery. Of course, he butchered most of them, but he was able to indulge his desire. Or the one who had been in the laboratory of a scientist who experimented with gags, dildos, and body glues. The experiments kept going wrong and dozens of subjects had to be put down, but were immediately replaced by fresh ones. Or the fussy prince who owned a crocodile, and if his slaves didn't perform the way he wished, he would have them fed to the crocodile on the spot.

Many tell similar stories of being lured with promises of glamorous jobs as models, musicians, or movie roles, then trapped and sold into slavery. Two actually entered servitude voluntarily. More than a few have gone quietly insane (violent insanity means a transfer elsewhere). Some responded to propositions online. Others were simply victims of opportunistic kidnappings. Fathers, brothers, step-fathers, law enforcement officers, clergy, school counselors, as well as professional traffickers, have all been involved in this unspeakable crime.

This was an unexpected treat, because I wasn't sure about what I was getting into. All 111 girls in Prince Ibrahim's Il Giardino Posteriore harem tell their own stories of how they wound up in the harem and what they think about it. Some of them tell really spooky stories about where they had been before, like the girl who used to belong to a guy who flunked out of medical school but bought slaves so he could operate on people anyway. Of course, most of them died, but he got to indulge his desire. Or the one who had been in a mad scientist's laboratory and he would run bizarre experiments on the unfortunate victims there. Touching, moving, heart-breaking stories.

Good Book Disturbing Read.

If you are the parent of a teenage girl, you should put this book on your must-read list. It is a fascinating but extremely disturbing collection of anecdotes from girls who describe how they wound up in a slave harem. One reviewer said that there was "too much fantasy," but I think she completely missed the point. A number of girls have gone insane and have retreated into fantasy worlds where they feel safe, because they could no longer deal with their real lives locked away forever in a harem.

Disturbing Because It's True

Some of the women in the harem are ones that were also ones who were killed at the Rodeo in horrible ways. Some girls were killed after only being in the harem a few months for "poor performance" because they had trouble adjusting to having been kidnapped from their families and country. Prince Ibrahim killed a girl a month, just because he could. Some of the women had gone quietly insane after years of being cooped up in a pretty cage with no way out.
This series makes you wish you could send a few people to the Rodeo or the Ranch-a prison where the girls are roughly treated by the guards and no medical treatment is available. People sent there will eventually die after a few years of rough treatment, hot iron brandings, inadeequate food, sleep and care. It is horrible to know things like this are happening and that instead of being viewed as human beings or women, all they are viewed as is valuable livestock.

Vol. II of II. Fills a gap in the history of the Kreigsmarine. Photos are well chosen and reproduced, explanations more than adequate. Variety of introductory sub chapters on methodology, primary and secondary sources, reference points etc. In short a detailed approach to the photos and interpretation thereof. The two volumes well worth the price.

I highly recommend this excellent work and its companion volume

The second volume in what is considered by many to be the most comprehensive work on German camouflage in WW II, this book details everything from battleship Tirpitz to the various cruisers and destroyers that once sailed the seas. I highly recommend this excellent work and its companion volume, mostly because of the amazing detail of each camouflage detailed for each ship. The authors even show you where they are not sure of a particular scheme. This book and the other volume belong in any collection of work on the Kriegsmarine.

Applied Metaphysics

In this essay by Valery, sea shells serve as a catalyst to introspection and investigation. Valery, through the inspection of sea shells, poses some of the most basic metaphysical questions, but in an original way. By asking these questions regarding a concrete object, Valery achieves an immediate profundity rarely reached in most philosophical treatises. And, of course, the writing is translucid and precise, furthering the case for Valery as the French Walter Pater.
