J. B. Kennedy argues that Plato's dialogues have an unsuspected musical structure and use symbols to encode Pythagorean doctrines. The followers of Pythagoras famously thought that the cosmos had a hidden musical structure and that wise philosophers would be able to hear this harmony of the spheres. Kennedy shows that Plato gave his dialogues a similar, hidden musical structure. He divided each dialogue into twelve parts and inserted symbols at each twelfth to mark a musical note. These passages are relatively harmonious or dissonant, and so traverse the ups and downs of a known musical scale. Many of Plato's ancient followers insisted that Plato used symbols to conceal his own views within the dialogues, but modern scholars have denied this. Kennedy, an expert in Pythagorean mathematics and music theory, now shows that Plato's dialogues do contain a system of symbols. Scholars in the humanities, without knowledge of obsolete Greek mathematics, would not have been able to detect these musical patterns. This book begins with a concise and accessible introduction to Plato's symbolic schemes and the role of allegory in ancient times. The following chapters then annotate the musical symbols in two of Plato's most popular dialogues, the Symposium and Euthyphro, and show that Plato used the musical scale as an outline for structuring his narratives.

A totally new approach to Plato's Dialogues: from literal interpretations and towards allegorical interpretation

A mind blowing book, and I would like to quote a review by Mr. Lee Trepanier's, Saginaw Valley State University, wich sums up witch insights this book has to offer: "J.B. Kennedy’s The Musical Structure of Plato’s Dialogues seeks to establish that Plato divided some, if not all, of his dialogues into twelve equal sections. These twelve sections, Kennedy argues, correlate with the Pythagorean twelve division multi-octave musical scale. From his analysis of the Symposium and Euthyphro, Kennedy argues that Plato used the underlying musical scale as an outline for his dialogues, with arguments appearing between notes and major turns in the argument located as notes. These findings support the interpretations of Plato’s followers who insisted that Plato used symbols to conceal his own views in the dialogues. They would also turn contemporary commentators of Plato away from literal interpretations and towards allegorical ones that Plato himself perhaps used."

A footnote to Plato - not the De Vinci code

It is often said that all Western Philosophy is but a footnote to Plato, and this book is an extraordinary footnote indeed! Professor Kennedy argues on mathematical and musical grounds that there is level of meaning encoded in the structure Plato's work and that moreover the underlying material is asserting that Pythagorean mathematics is the basis for understanding the functioning of the universe, not the gods. On the surface just the kind of idea beloved of novelists like Dan Brown, but Professor Kennedy is a scientist making a serious argument basing his theory on counting the lines in the original text and the appearance at precise musical intervals in the Greek scale of key ideas - positive where the interval is harmonious and negative where the interval is dissonant. Note: I have not read this book yet but I have read Professor Kennedy's earlier announcements of having discovered a hidden symbolic structure in Plato's dialogues and found it worthy of serious consideration. There is a lot of material on the web including interviews of Professor Kennedy for prospective readers to check. So like a lot of other people I have been waiting for this book. Interestingly Plato's ancient followers asserted that his work contained a hidden symbolic structure based on Pythagoras but in the absence of convincing evidence modern scholars have naturally discounted it. Kennedy's discovery emerged while teaching a course based on his specialized knowledge of the mathematics of ancient music and simultaneously teaching a course on Plato's philosophy. While many authors purposely obscure meaning for a variety of reasons Professor Kennedy argues powerfully that the threat of religious persecution motivated Plato. Plato had seen his own teacher Socrates executed for challenging the religion of his day and himself went into exile from Athens, arguably to avoid persecution. The dangerous belief that Kennedy thinks Plato was hiding was the Pythagorean idea that mathematics, not Zeus, was the key to understanding nature. As a scientist Kennedy quite rightly sees his discovery as bearing directly on the birth of modern science. If Kennedy's theory becomes generally accepted it will be fascinating to see the of reevaluation of Plato's work. I can't vouch for the readability of this book, but Professor Kennedy earlier book Space, Time, and Einstein which is an introduction to Physics for the layman is eminently readable. If Western Philosophy and the history of science interests you then this book merits you serious consideration.

THE Book on Observable Phenomena!

Although written in Canadian English, this publication is a beautifully worded resource for explaining observable phenomena, whether it's rainbows, eclipses or nebulae, etc. I love this book, and I especially look forward to next year's edition (2017), which will include details about the Great American Eclipse of August 21st.

Essential Reading for the Amateur Astronomer

This is the second year I have purchased the current RASC Observer's Handbook. It has been and remains one of the best reference books for amateur astronomy in North America. If you are interested in amateur astronomy and don't want to miss out on this year's best events or want a better understanding of what you're looking at you cannot afford not to get this book.

Hitting The Nail On The Head

This collection of messages complied by James L. Snyder on A.W. Tozer's theme of "Rut, Rot, or Revial: The Problem of Change and Breaking Out of the Status Quo", is a challenge to all Christians. Tozer presents to us the present condition of the church universal even though it was written more than 35 years ago. The message within this book is timeless as Tozer uses a wide variety scripture to support the decayed portion of the church. Tozer challenges all of us who label ourselves as Christian to wake up from our long sleep, or rut as he called it and press on to the higher calling of God. He makes it clear that change is the most difficult thing a church does and it comes at a price. He also shares the importance of the individual in the body of Christ and change is dependent on all the individuals changing so the church can change. The book flows well considering it is a compilation of sermons preached on this specific topic. If there is a downside, it would be some of the illustrations are outdated. Keeping in mind the messages were given back in the early 60s and it is sometimes hard for the modern reader to get the point. However, it is excellent reading for any Christian who wishes to deepen their spiritual life

A Prophetic Call to the Church

A.W. Tozer is simply amazing. He was truly a Spirit-taught man of God who learned how to wait in God's presence and allowed the Lord to open His Word to him. Out of his relationship with Jesus came many powerful books. All of Tozer's works are gems.

In this classic book, Tozer takes aim at the comfort level of most churches. He says that we are on a course of either rutting as the children of Israel did in the wilderness, rotting as many of the bodies of the Israelites did (1 Cor. 10:1-13) or revival. It is our choice. While Tozer may seem to be moving toward an Arminian understanding of revival, he clearly believes that we must wait for God's presence to come to truly declare a revival.

Its a big one.
You can use it as additional information resource, but do not use it as a first-line reference.

Army of Maria Theresa

The Army of Maria Theresa is a book that is well written and well worth reading. Anyone interested in European warfare in the 18th century will enjoy this work. Christopher Duffy clearly explains the evolution of the Army under Maria Theresa to including an expose on all of the ethnic components. He explains order of battle, uniforms, grooming standards, equipment and weapons and patterns of life of the Soldiers. He also does a fine job describing the commanders and campaigns they fought under Maria Theresa. In reading about the campaigns one discovers that in her many battles against Frederick the Great her armies gave as good as they got and sent Frederick scurrying off the battlefield on more than one occasion. A great book, glad I read it.

The Army of Maria Theresa

Mr. Duffy created this fine work some years ago (1977) as a companion piece to his much lauded "The Army of Frederick The Great". Since publication, both books have become the gold standard in English on the Austrian and Prussian Armies of the Seven Years War. I recommend both of these books, in fact anything written by Mr. Duffy, with the highest possible endorsement. His scholarship is clean, even and well researched. His enthusiasum for the subject matter only increases the readers level of interest. His style of writing is very approachable and never leaves one wondering what was meant.

Cover to cover, "The Army of Maria Theresa" is full of very useful information for the serious scholar, the casual reader, the wargamer and the modeler. It is replete with wonderful anecdotes concerning the Empress Queen, her political and military leaders and very neatly covers virtually every aspect of the Austrian Army, its soldiers and civilians. Good biographies of the major players are included as is an excellent coverage of the major campaigns of this army. There are some thorough descriptions of ordanance, weapons, uniforms and equipment, good discussions of wheeled vehicles and their horsepower and an excellent discussion of the soldiers life from his induction to his end, either on the battlefield or in peacetime. Medical services and religious needs are presented in some detail as well. A snapshot of regimental histories was greatly appreciated and the bibliography is also very useful providing almost five pages of source material and additional research opportunities.

A perusal of this work will provide even the casual reader an excellent overview of the Army that not only nearly stopped Frederick The Great, but also went on to provide Napoleon Bonaparte with his most contentious enemy.

His newer, two volume study of the Theresian Austrian Military, "Instrument of War" and "By Force of Arms" seem to be a greatly expanded version of this book, but there are still nuggets to be gleaned from this book that do not show up in the newer works.

I am hoping that perhaps a two volume reappraisal of "The Army of Frederick The Great" may be just around the corner. I have both the original edition and the updated version of that work. Duffy is a master and both books are very useful.

"The Army of Maria Theresa" belongs on the bookshelf of every military scholar either academic or casual.

British comedy at it's best. After the Major's wife has left him for his best friend, he lets the flat out simultaneously to two tennants. Jill uses the flat on the weekends, while Phillip uses it during the week. Unstoppable chaos insues once Jill suprisingly gets the week off, and the Major has to hide the truth from Phillip and everyone else caught in the web of confusion, including his ex-wife. Overall, extremely hilarious and a great piece to put on for an audience!

Permaculture is a fascinating agricultural practice that seeks to recreate the effortless efficiency and balance of natural ecosystems with human-designed systems aimed at food production. The texts in this growing genre tend to fall into two broad categories: well-intentioned but slightly loopy tomes that are equal parts landscape planning and New Age philosophy, or technical manuals that often suggest the need for a great deal of land contouring and environmental engineering in order to build your utopian homestead. Practical Permaculture strikes an excellent balance between the two by clearly introducing basic concepts and providing excellent examples but not suggesting a multitude of projects that are beyond the reach of the average gardener or homeowner. Beautifully laid out and illustrated, it makes permaculture accessible to the average person who merely wants to lessen their impact on the natural world and experience the excitement of creating a beautifully diverse polyculture rather than a sterile suburban lawn. If you have any interest in permaculture this book is a great place to start and, if we're lucky, change the world one plant guild at a time. (Read it and you'll understand the reference.)

Pragmatic permaculture guidance in a beautiful book

The book is really thoughtful, practical, and excellently produced and written.

It starts with a brief introduction to permaculture that builds on historical origins but avoids being a repeat of Mollison's visionary work. Practical Permaculture gives very clear examples, bases information on science, and modernizes concepts appropriately for 2015. The framework of the book is a step by step, well thought-out- process to designing a site using permaculture principles . "Designing a site" is one of the most important permaculture activities - the book helps you learn the important characteristics of your farm/backyard/community garden, deciding your goals, and placing elements such as plants, orchards, households, coops, ponds etc so they can reinforce each other following the dynamics of nature. It teaches the use of design tools such as sectors, zones, edges, and patterns in non-nonsense, approachable style. By following this book you'll have learned a lot and taken many of the important first steps in setting up a sustainable and enjoyable system.

While many other other general permaculture books may be a repeat of Mollison's "Designer's Manual", the authors here provide genuine value and insight into the process of design, considering modern tools and options, and focusing on the actionable and pragmatic aspects of implementing a permaculture project. They also bring experience applying permaculture in colder climates and can put forth relevant species and examples of techniques to the table.

The quality of the book is very high - materials, design, layout, illustrations are great.

Having read many (most) of available books on the topic, and as a holder of a Permaculture Design Certificate I find myself recommending and gifting this book again and again for those who are new to Permaculture, and to those that are more aware of Permaculture generally but ask "so... how do I start"?

This has been a great addition to my library - even though it ends up open on my desk most of the time. I hope the authors consider embarking on additional writing projects.

I'm so happy that I picked this book up during the Permaculture Voices conference in San Diego. The writing is so clear and concise and the illustrations are fabulous! I've read and browsed through many permaculture themed books over the years, but few have grabbed me like this one. This book guides the reader through the important concepts, strategies and considerations for planning and implementing a permaculture plan and it does so very efficiently and effectively. From my perspective, this is a great book for everyone: from novices wanting to learn about and implement permaculture on their properties to experienced permaculturists seeking guidance on ways improve their systems. It covers a broad range of scenarios, from permaculture homesteads to broad acre permaculture. It is also up to date on the latest and greatest methods and is exceptionally well illustrated.
If you are looking to purchase your first permaculture book, I highly recommend "Practical Permaculture!"

You're better off buying the old edition

This edition is very VERY similar to the 2015 edition. There is a different problem on pg 52, problem 1.8 and the beginning of section 13.1 has been updated but goes back to the 2015 edition's text at the paragraph on page 354 which starts with, "Most domestic RP machines..." Other than that, the books are almost identical.

Besides details that encompass updated UI of solidworks 2016, the tutorials are the same. If you want to save a little extra money, you should be fine buying the 2015 version. I don't usually leave reviews, but I thought this could help out a few of you who are hoping someone could confirm this for you!!!

Confusing At Times, But Good For The Basics

I am a student and had to pick this book up for a class. This book is effective at teaching you the basics of SolidWorks, hence the 'intro', but I found that overall it had some confusing aspects even. The book at times cranks the difficulty up from one to one-hundred, leaving you puzzled. Examples of this will be teaching you these tools to totally mess up your design, then having you revert it but only telling you to do so in the middle of a giant paragraph. There are so many intricacies involved in creating the final product step-by-step their way. I ended up learning more tinkering with the program due to the fact that the SolidWorks suite they show in the book is slightly different than the suite provided by the educational license. It's a good book for reference if I ever have to look back on certain aspects, like using some of the more difficult tools, but for the basics it might be worth looking at some tutorial videos rather than dropping a benjamin.
